Sponsored By: The Book of Mormon - The New York Times calls The Book of Mormon "the best musical of this century." The Washington Post says, "It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals." And Entertainment Weekly says, "Grade A: the funniest musical of all time." Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it "Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal." The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical.
Great numbers for many of the shows. Now, the winter months will prove to be a challenge for those shows which are struggling. Erika Jayne starts her run today as Roxie, until March 29th. Since I don't know much about her, I wonder if she'll be a plus for the box office at the Ambassador.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Now that 'Tootsie' and 'The Lightning Thief' had their final curtain, which show will be on everyone's target next for the question : "How much longer can this show last?"

Asking for a friend...LOL"
We still have The Inheritance for a few more months....
Or do we? After all, with these grosses, how much longer can this show last?

Looking at the grosses, I'd have to say none as of now. But let's see what the winter brings. The Marquis is the only available theater and I'm surprised nothing has been announced to go in there for the Spring. Of course, this will make it that much more difficult for Beetlejuice to move to another theater.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The Marquis is getting a jukebox musical, as if it worked so well the last time.

I thought several shows that had 9 performances the week before would only have 7 performances this past week. However, Wicked, Lion King, Frozen and probably a few others all had 8 performances this past week (with 9 the week before.) Ain't too Proud had 9 performances this week and 8 the week before. That's crazy! I'm guessing they're paid overtime?
Great to see Waitress finish very strong! I agree Inheritance numbers needs to get better. BTW, what's next for the Lyceum?
some shows did 7 performances the week before Christmas, did 9 the week of Christmas, then 8 the week of New Year's.

If I remember correctly a few years back there were changes made in the union rules allowing producers to do 2 weeks with 9 performances each without having to do 7 performances the previous or following week. If I had to guess there likely is a time and a half bump in pay for that 9th performance and principals are not required to perform, but considering when these 9 performance weeks are placed (Christmas and Easter) the premium pricing more then covers the bump in overhead. It’s typically the weird mid-summer 9 performance week that requires a show to do 7 performances the week before or after.
The argument that a new show struggling to reach its nut will likely be able to use the 9th performance during the most profitable week of the year to build a nest egg for the winter weeks that a show will struggle to break even before awards season. It makes sense, but the irony is that its mostly the SRO shows that utilize the 9th performance.

lol indeed. I noticed both Lion King and Wicked each decreased its weekly gross by $1 million compared to the week before primarily because of the 9th performance and premium tix sold. Regardless, both shows still grossed over $2 million each!
