Playbill stopped publishing song lists?- Page 2

That said, once previews of a new show are over, http://https://xender.vip/ https://discord.software/ https://omegle.onl/ I've never understood why shows don't list a songs, unless it's something like Passion or Les Mis (almost entirely sung with a lot of interstitial songs) or something involving spoilers. There's the old Marvin Hamlisch anecdote about how the Chorus Line song was originally titled "T!ts and A$s," and it never got much of a laugh because they gave away the punchline in the playbill; title was changed to "Dance: Ten, Looks: Three" and it got the laugh.

First, when they are handed out at the end, an usher just stands there with a stack passing them out, and the pace of exit is slower than their ability to do that in most theaters.

Second, by the time you get the Playbill, your ticket is already scanned, so if you want to know whether someone is out, etc., you should really get that from the board in the lobby. I always look at that by default before I go into any show, even if a callout wouldn't make me upset or want a refund. Since the full cast slips many shows use are less clear about who is in/out, unless you already have the cast memorized beforehand.

I have to admit that I hate not having the song list in order, with the characters identified.  

-- Shoot me, but I like to understand how many songs the leads have.  If someone in the supporting cast has a greasing in Act 2, I like to see if they get another shot in Act 2

-- When I look back, the inclusion of the song list frequently makes my memories of the performance more vividly.  Even when I played the OCR for a good-not-great show a thousand times 40 years ago, I am surprised when I look at the Playbill today and remember 'oh, yeah, that song occurred when'.  It enhances my memory of the show.  (I do not think I am OCD but, unless I have lost some in a move, I have a playbill for every performance I have ever seen, with one exception.  I saw a preview of Drat! The Cat!, which I loved, when they were only giving a leaflet, I assume because the preview seats were half-priced.  I didn't keep it, figuring that I would get one in some future trip to the city...but it only lasted a week.

-- Frankly, when I am bored, I want to see how much more I have to suffer through before intermission, at which point (if it is really bad) I will probably leave.  I have always thought that I did it quite unobtrusively.

 

To site a current example, I really do not listen to rock music (unless I am sitting in the car, while my wife drives, or am somewhere where music is being played (party, some restaurants, etc.).   Because of that, I recognize and like many tunes without knowing their name.  When I saw Moulin Rouge, which I LOVED, I recognized a number of songs (also did not recognize a lot, including Roxanne and the Act 2 show-stopping opener).  Other than the one that has ga ga in the lyrics, I didn't  know their titles or who wrote and / or performed them originally.  I really would have liked to have that information, mainly to know who created the song which I enjoyed so much.  I could have gotten on google the next day and problem solved.  Didn't need all the snippets identified...everyone in the theatre knew most of them and they were gone so quickly that they represented an 'of the moment burst of fun'.

All the songs in Moulin Rouge are listed in the very back of the playbill with all the copyright info. It's not a song list in show order but if you're trying to remember a specific song it might be helpful.

I like seeing the song list, too. But, you can't always judge a show by the song list.  Mumbledy years ago, when I first saw A Chorus Line in Los Angeles, there was a slip of paper about an understudy for Paul. I looked at the song list - didn't see Paul's name on any song.  So, okay, not a big deal, I thought.  I didn't really know the show at that point - other than knowing what it was about in general and the Tony Award performance. Well, as most on here will know, I was wrong about Paul's role.   BTW, the understudy was terrific, whomever it was.  I can still see and hear those last lines.....

If it’s a particularly boring show, if I’m tired, feel cramped and wanna stand up, or any other reason, I’ve checked the Playbill. Likewise, for songs that I really like, It would he nice to track the in the playbill. Can’t do that if they’re not listed though, and it’s very hard to do so if the album hasn’t been released.

I saw a regional production of Ragtime a few years ago and the lady a few seats to my right kept looking at her program through-out the first act. It annoyed pretty much all of us around her, as she reached for her cell phone light to be able to read it.

We later learned that she had vision  and hearing impaired issues, and her hearing device went out just as the show started, so she needed to rely on the program to follow along as best she could. All of us around her helped to fix her issues and she never took at the program until the end. We all felt happy she was able to enjoy the second 1/2 with out distributions.

Imagine if theaters did not give out programs until you exit the theater? That would save a lot of program opening/closing distributions and clean up once the house closes.

Sorry, but if you were a REAL theater-goer, you'd get seated as soon as they open the theater, open your Playbill and memorize the cast of characters as well as the longlist before the brought the house lights down.

 

During intermission, you memorize the cast bios.

 

It's as simple as that

Actually, many shows are already choosing to do this. This exact practice has become increasingly common recently. It's far from the norm, but I've seen it implemented more than a few times in the past 5-6 years, both on Broadway and Off-Broadway.

Part of the reason is. like most things, money. Playbill only gives the production so many pages for free, if they go over that they have to pay for each additional page each week. So if they have other info they need/want to get in the Playbill, the song list is an easy thing to cut.
