This board has a lot of hate going around about a lot of hate going around for the modern "fandom musicals" for lack of a better term, so this thread is to combat that, if you like Be More Chill, let's talk about that! Mean Girls, more power to you! any other show the board at large doesn't like but you do, come on in and talk about it

When did peoples opinions become "hate"?

Some shows definitely get attacked more than others...that's for sure. Would love to see this thread flourish!

I get why people weren't into Heathers when it came out, but I adore that score. Honestly I do not think I would love musicals as much as I do now without that show. I have yet to see it live (only through the cast album and clips online), but if its ever in NYC again, I'm going to put down so much money for ticket.

I like HEATHERS, too! Also DOGFIGHT and FAR FROM HEAVEN.

I also adore Heathers. Did not see the off-bway run but have seen it twice regionally. I was actually just listening to the cast recording today.

I remember recently looking at the previews thread for when it was off-Broadway and people compared the score to bubble gum pop. Am I the only one who doesn't hear that? It is more pop-ish, but way too dark to be bubble gum. I'm glad to see I'm not alone on liking Heathers here, but that previews thread makes it looks like most people found it disappointing. Maybe compared to the movie (because that is 3000% iconic in every way), but the musical still holds up very well on it's own, especially compared to other movie-to-stage musicals.

The moment I found out I was going to London last fall with my Dad (family event), I immediately asked him if we could see Heathers because I knew it was going to be there when we were. I absolutely loved it!

I know this isn't a musical a lot of people enjoy, but I think Amelie is absolutely charming.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking about three songs (Beautiful, Dead Girl Walking and Freeze Your Brain) and I just...don't...see how these songs could be classified as "bubble gum pop". I agree that they're way too dark to be put into that category.

Wait, Dogfight is an "unpopular" popular musical? Barely anyone that I know is familiar with it, and I haven't seen anyone actually dislike it.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Anyone who thinks that Heathers is "bubblegum pop" either hasn't actually seen/listened to Heathers or doesn't know what bubblegum pop is.

Here's the thread, and I do agree the original film's score is darker, but just because one of the composers made Legally Blonde (another musical that deserves this thread too) doesn't make it bubblegum pop (LB also doesn't fit well into bubblegum pop, but it's closer). Even upbeat songs like "Shine Your Light" or "Blue" (when it was in the production) don't sound like any understanding I have of bubblegum pop. Besides the direction (I haven't see the show, but looking at pictures of the set, I'll take their word on that), I do not understand most of the criticisms of the show in that thread.

Does Anastasia count?  I remember when Anastasia and TBV announced their closing within a few days of each other, and the TBV closing thread was filled with so much (deserved) love for the show, but Anastasia's was filled with lots of criticism of the show and its creative choices.  While I concede that there were a few things that could be better about the show, I think it did a great job of telling Anya's story, and if it hadn't been for the Cody Simpson debacle, it probably would've lasted longer on Broadway.  Also, it was the first show that relied upon projections that I saw where I really didn't mind the projections (the Eiffel Tower moment during the Act II opener comes to mind as a really cool moment).

I find Heathers’ fanbase and general writing quite unappealing, but the score to that show is absolutely fantastic. The songs are all so charmingly catchy that I can’t completely hate the show, at least.

Cats is a masterpiece that deserved every second of its long run on Broadway.

That's probably another reason I brought up Heathers. I don't think the fandom is as bad as more popular musicals (BMC, DEH, Hamilton, etc), but that's still picking the lesser of two evils. Any fandom that gets too big gets toxic and weird, especially online.
