I'm no expert but I would just assume that as 'chief" theater critics at NYT, they both see everything, literally. I also know that the last few reviews I've read in the NYT - today's Burn This, and last week Oklahoma, and shortly before that King Lear - were by Brantley. So maybe it's as simple as it's Jesse's turn?!
"

I don’t think that’s how it works. Normally Jesse Green only gets to review a show when Ben Brantley, the chief critic, choose not to review.

But aren’t they “co-chief critics,” unlike when Isherwood was merely number 2?

Somebody wanna fill us in on how "the ascent" worked downtown with...spoiler tags I guess?
"

Well, that staging was three years ago and will never be seen, so what's to spoil?

That production was more immersive, the audience configured in a 3-sided thrust. The ascent at the end largely took place as a walk through playing areas in the audience- it felt more substantial as a journey.

After reading the reviews, the only question remaining is how many Tony nominations will it receive?

Congrats to the cast and crew for great reviews. I loved the show except for one thing. Someone has to explain Reeve Carney to me. His voice is ugly, he can't act and he's not really that good looking that the other two things wouldn't matter.

I don’t think this is true?? I mean I guess you could interpret Persephone as jealous but isn’t it more because she admires Orpheus and wants them to be together and alive?
"

Considering she says something like "take your time" when he retreats into his office, I tend to agree with you.

I think it's safe to say it'll end up with 12 or 13, depending on how acting nods turn out (Page and Grey are extremely likely, De Shields is very likely, I don't think anyone else will crack it).

I don't see Hadestown til late June but having seen Oklahoma, I have to wonder if Damon Daunno would have been better than Carney. I loved Damon as Curly (that voice!!). Seems as an actor he preferred Curly...way more going on there.

I have it getting 14 nominations –– basically every category except Lead Actor. Noblezada, Page, DeShields, and Gray will get acting nods. The only person who could knock Noblezada is Caruso for Beetlejuice, but I still think Noblezada will get swept up in the love for Hadestown.

In a stronger year, the Book might miss out on a nomination (because it can be blamed for the slowness of Act 2), but the competition is weak enough that it will get in but not win. Robert Horn will win for Tootsie.

I don't always agree with Greene but his "rent" comparison was spot on. I found it to be a bit distracting.

The show deserves good reviews as it is a good show.

this should get nominated across the board- ironically, i think the biggest reaches will be Lead Actor and Lead Actress (though Noblezada got better notices that I thought she would).

while i don't think these reviews scream adulation the past winners have (Hamilton, Bands Visit), having seen Tootsie and BMC and from what I hear of Beetlejuice, hard to see anyone else taking Best Musical, right?

I am still praying for THE PROM to take best musical. But this will probably get it.

Wow... they already raised their prices... congrats to all those who have already bought their tickets. This just became the second most expensive show on broadway after Hamilton.

It looks like this one will probably take it home.  The only real competition I could see would be from Tootsie and/or The Prom, especially if the voters want to go towards a more lighthearted musical (like Kinky Boots or Gentleman's Guide).  I still think BMC will get a nomination (if only because of the fanfare leading up to it, the introduction of Joe Iconis to musical theatre, and/or certain performances by some of the actors), but it definitely won't win.

I predict the show will get the most nominations and I expect it will take home Best musical but I don't think it will be a sweep like Band's Visit.

Yepp. This made me frown too. Lines from How Long

Persephone: I don't mind if you look at other girls now and then

Hades: the girl means nothing to me

Persephone: I know. But she means everything to him

And also now includes persephone stating specifically that she admires Orpheus because he reminds her of the love Hades used to have for her. Like, they go out of their way to show how not jealous persephone is so this is a little puzzling to me. It was never about Hades taking eurydice as a lover, it was what his treatment of two flawed but hopeful young lovers says about his character

This must just be an oversight, I'm sure it won't last much longer, but the SONGBIRD discount code is still working.  I just bought a second row mezz seat for $109 that's $249 at full price after tonight's increases.

Obviously this is subjective, but I am more than happy to help with an explanation. I did not love him in this show because he was directed to play the character a way that guts the core of the piece, BUT his voice is gorgeous, he actually sells the character really well (its just a horribly directed choice) and he is probably one of the better looking men leading a new show on Broadway this season. Hope that was helpful.

For what dates did the code work for? I tried it and it’s not.

I have not seen this show, so I’m not pre judging or anything, but I find it so interesting that the lead character is almost universally panned yet the show is getting raves. I’d find it hard on paper for a show to be A+ if I can’t buy into the lead character, but it just say a lot about the staging of this show then. I just find it interesting

Not sure if Gallagher can hit those notes either, and he might be too old...but he'd act the hell out of it!
