I just don’t know if I personally would enjoy seeing Ruthie sing her heartbreaking performance of “Something Wonderful” knowing the subtext of what has happened in her life. If she is happy doing this then great for her and the audience. But it’s so, so sad. I don’t think this is the kind of thing you ever truly can move on from. You can get on with your life. But it isn’t the kind of thing you’d move on from even after decades in my opinion.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

The key statement in your post is “in my opinion”. You have no right to judge how someone copes with pain or loss. I’d understand if that is how you would have to deal with it, but it seems like Ruthie is different. Ruthie is incredibly strong for doing this and if she had chosen not to do this, she’d still be incredibly strong. Much love to her.

Still...where is my judgement?  I didn't suggest when anyone has to do that...in fact I tried to address those that suggested she might not be ready to do so.

If you read my post it says great for her/there is no judgement at all.  The main purpose of my post is to share what I think it would feel like for me to be an audience member of that performance.

There’s nothing even slightly wrong, let alone “gross,” about what she wrote. Your reaction here is really bizarre.

I join you in wishing Ruthie great success in the show! I loved her performance at Lincoln Center and her Tony Award - in a cut-throat category that year! - was well- deserved.

I didn't see any judgement in it either, FWIW.

I also did not see any judgment in dramamama's post, and I was the person she was responding to. I also did not mean to judge Miles and her decision, and am sorry it came across that way.

I know you’ve already said you didn’t mean for this to come off as judging, but it definitely didn’t come off well.

Personally, I wish her all the best. It takes incredible strength to do what she’s doing, and I hope this brings her some of the healing she needs. I wish I could get to London to see this production.

The person who knows what is best for Ruthie is Ruthie. Case closed.

I wish her all the strength, all the best, and I sincerely hope she is able to find peace and heal, in whatever way is best for her.

^ This. Let Ruthie heal in whichever way she feels is best for her and her family, whether it be with religion, with performing, with whatever. No one has any right to dictate what they think is best, especially since none of us actually know her in real life.

Finally some good news. I hope this will help her heal. Not that you can ever completely heal from what she's been through, but hopefully she'll find it cathartic. I continue to think of her and send my best wishes.

This just adds to the sadness of this story.   How did the reporter / editor not confirm the details before publishing?

Well it's starting to make more sense now. I am surprised that a publication like playbill would make such an error - hope it can be corrected soon.

In Playbill’s defense, her headshot is (or was, I haven’t checked) still on the official site for the West End production.

First of all, wow. I can't even begin to imagine how strong Ruthie must be. This is really inspiring, and I hope she can continue to heal all that she possibly can.

Secondly, I know it's a stretch, but was anyone at the show tonight? I wonder how much of the London audience had any idea about the situation. I hope there was at least some audience acknowledgement, as she deserves that, and so much more.

It would be nice if we could retire this thread and start another moving forward. Shine a new light so to speak. :)
