Family is going up for the parade. My son is more the "sports" fan.  Daughter loves theater.  Looking for suggestions.  Right now considering: Play that Went Wrong, Miss Saigon, Bronx Tale, Waitress. Any feedback is greatly suggested.  Trying not to spend too much. Evan Hansen is out and Band's visit is sold out.

If money isn't a issue, Dear Evan Hansen, but I also recommend Book Of Mormon, SpongeBob, School Of Rock

Definitely Spongebob, and I haven't even seen it yet.  I have theatre friends who never like anything who have been raving about it non-stop and some have gone back to see it a second time already.

Play That Goes Wrong is such a waste, not funny, no plot.

I'd say do between Book of Mormon (which is hysterical), Bronx Tale, or even Aladdin (if you're Disney fans). School of Rock also isn't bad.

none of us really like sponge bob...  but I will look at the trailer.  He is mature..So it can be for "adult" audience. Just not Phantom of the Opera style.

Come from Away and Once on this Island are both great shows, that are not Phantom of the Opera-esque.

I took a group of high school kids to School of Rock and they all LOVED it!  The same group is seeing Spongebob in January.  For my kids, 16 was too young for Book of Mormon.  they saw it at 17 and 18.  I think my 17 year old son would love The Play that Goes Wrong.  It's farce and slapstick....which are definitely right in his wheelhouse.  Additionally, he loved Evan Hansen and Come from Away (he was obsessed for months).  Off-Broadway he's a huge fan of Avenue Q (but it's pretty racy at points) and is DYING to see Puffs.  Good luck!

And I always gotta recommend Anastasia (though I know it's probably less likely this time haha)

Seconding The Play That Goes Wrong if you’re only seeing one show, and if your daughter is okay with not seeing a musical. It’ll probably be one of your cheapest options.

The Book of Mormon’s also a good choice, if your daughter is older than your son. 16 is plenty old enough for it.

Come From Away is just good all around, so that’s another option (and it’s on the shorter side, if you find that as a plus).

Also, consider Avenue Q off-broadway.

Ok.. based on ticket availability we have it narrowed down to three:

Miss Saigon

Once on This Island

Kinky Boots

Please give me your opinion on which one to see.

All three are pretty good, but this would be my recommended order ->

1. Kinky Boots: amazing cast, really fun numbers, and solid entertainment with a good message.

2. Once On This Island: fun material, amazing cast. Lower than Kinky because they're still in previews and I haven't seen the updated version so don't know what to expect.

3. Miss Saigon : solid cast, great numbers, but the material is very heavy handed and serious. The ending is not hopeful or happy (sorta same with Once... but that one is still more bearable). The context is show is Vietnam War which I doubt a 16 year old would be able to relate with much.

Honestly, I'd let your daughter make the decision. None of those three are shows I think a 16yo boy who likes sports and doesn't like theatre would enjoy.

I STRONGLY recommend Play That Goes Wrong. Absolutely hysteric wether you enjoy theater or not, and not too adult or too childish. It's definitely going to be one of your cheaper options as well, and it's a great time!

As a teenager myself, (a female but with male friends who I see shows with), my male friends (all around your son's age) have all found the Book of Mormon to be hilarious (even those that aren't theater fans). But it depends on how mature your son and daughter are and what you're comfortable with your kids seeing. It is a very crude show. I first saw it when I was 14 and understood the humor behind it but it isn't family friendly in any sense.

Of your 3 finalists, I'd probably pick Miss Saigon. It's a true musical theater classic and this is a great production for which reasonably priced tickets are readily available. Your son can read the Wikipedia article on the Vietnam war and that will give him all the context he needs. Your daughter should also enjoy the great score. As far as the ending not being upbeat and hopeful, guess what, it portrays real life, not everything has a happy ending. You want to make sure both leads are in so I'd avoid Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday matinees when I believe one of them is usually out. You absolutely wouldn't go wrong with Kinky Boots either if you think your family would prefer something lighter and more comedic and that ends up being your choice but I think Miss Saigon is more of an epic drama and thus my first choice.

I haven't seen it yet, but I would recommend Once on this Island. It has had amazing reviews so far and the cast is amazing. I've heard that it is quite immersive as well.

I second the notion that you let your daughter choose. It sounds like it would mean the most to her and your son could end up loving whatever she chooses. In return, take her with him to a sporting event Show for 16 year old boy

SpongeBob or School of Rock for sure.
