I always thought Ti Moune would be a leading role but from looking at the Tony Awards back in the early 90s, I noticed LaChanze was nominated in the featured actress category (Daisy Eagan won the Tony.)

I don't understand how it's a featured role, the entire story revolves around her

The show may revolve around her character, but the show is still an ensemble piece.  No one is the lead really.  At least that's how it was in the original Broadway production.

Despite what the Tony classification was, it's definitely a lead. Yes, it's an ensemble show but the story is all about Ti Moune and her journey.

i’ve only seen it once, at the meadowbrook theatre in auburn hills MI, it was stunning and i definitely consider Ti Moune to be the lead

I think it's as clear cut of a lead role as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Sure, the ensemble is important (gods, storytellers) but she's the main character. It's all about her wants, her choices, the resolution of her character arc...

She was (along with her whole cast) billed below the title, which put her in that category unless her producers petitioned her up.

I would venture a guess that the producers of Once On This Island and The Secret Garden didn’t opt to petition either of those performers as Leading because they didn’t want them competing against Lea Salonga, who was going to win that award in a landslide that year regardless of competition.

And it’s funny that Eva doesn’t get the last bow in Miss Saigon.

She doesn't?? That's ludicrous!

Salonga only got the last bow during her two return engagements.

The Engineer has always had the last bow, presumably because it was originated by Pryce, who at the time was the “star” of the show.

But yeah. I’ve always found it odd Kim doesn’t bow last, too.

Wow! I didn't realize all this drama going on back in 1991! Do you guys think Hailey Kilgore will be considered for Best Leading or Best Featured actress for her role as Ti Moune in the Once on This Island revival?

I just had a funny image of Kilgore's mother this up as Wick3 ^

We'll find out in a few months what she'll be petitioned as, but I'd be surprised if Once On This Island is still open come Tony season. Falsettos managed to get multiple nominations despite having closed but it's really not that common.

Once on This Island.

The terms "Leading" and "Featured" are very misleading.  If the category is based on the billing of the actor (or a petition of the producers on behalf of the actor) rather than the role itself, the categories should be for "Leading Actor" or "Featured Actor" rather than "Leading Role" and "Featured Role".

Haha, fixed. In my defense, I was listening to Into The Woods a lot yesterday.

Unless Dreamgirls comes in, won’t there only be 3 revivals? So I’d assume Once On This Island could at least get a nomination for best revival even if it does close early.
