What competition did she win? I don't remember her being a reality show participant, although she has judged on several (The Sing Off and X Factor). I like Nicole and I don't think she's nearly as obscure to Americans as you all think. Her name by itself maybe a little, but I think she's physically recognizable. I think her voice is terrific too.

I agree, he doesn't seem like he's making a joke. He's very bitter and vindictive.

I agree with ALW actually. This was stupid of her. I heard she was amazing in England. And he raves about her endlessly. He loved her. She was his "new star." He's probably disappointed. This was a chance for her to get a Tony and establish herself more in the US.  She'll never be hired again on Broadway now likely. She probably got offered more money from X-factor I guess.

She won Popstars, one of the original singing show competitions on the WB. The five girls who won made it to the girl group Eden's Crush. She eventually left EC for the Pussycat Dolls.

I don't think playing Grizabella in the Broadway revival of Cats is the golden ticket to fame and awards that some people apparently think it is.

I don't think it was some terrible career decision to turn down this revival. What is the terrible decision is to turn it down for the UK X-Factor which has gone from being the most talked about and watched television show in the UK to being an absolute laughing stock which has to drastically change its presenters and judging panel every year to keep people talking. There's only one reason why anyone would agree to do this over Broadway and I guess Simon Cowell must have a lot of spare cash...

Not that it was wildly successful, but she was also NPH's cohost on Best Show Ever last fall.

Can we focus on the obvious question? How in the world does ALW actually think that the actress playing Grizabella would have an easy shot at the Tony????? This isn't the 80's Andrew.

Did you listen to the interview? He also thinks the original production of Chicago didn't run as long as the revival because of the scenic design. Not because of timing and the fact that it was completely overshadowed by a little show called A Chorus Line. He thinks he knows everything about musicals when in reality no one truly knows ahead of time what shows will catch on. If they did everyone would have invested in Hamilton.

I wonder if this whole story is BS and just fabricated to bring attention to the show.  She may have bowed out a while ago and agreed to this whole "I'm mad at you" scenario. They can "make up" in the future, and she can come back to do something bigger for him. It all seems very well-timed.  It "Tuck" closes, Carolee Carmello might be a good choice.

Carolee Carmello is an inspired choice. I think it would be wonderful (if Tuck closes...)

I love Carolee Carmello too much to want her anywhere near this mess. She deserves a role worthy of her talents and I don't think dressing up as a cat and singing the longest, most repetitive song this side of "Meadowlark" is it.

Anyway, I'd say I can't believe ALW threw Nicole under the bus like that except I can because he's done the same thing to several other actresses before her. He needs to cool it on the self-importance.

I agree that she's a wonderful talent, but considering she did "Scandalous," I don't think she'd be above doing "Cats."  It's a pretty sweet summer gig. Sing one song, possibly get a Tony nomination, and pay the bills. If there's been backstage talk of "Tuck" closing, she may have something lined up, but if not, why not?

I want nothing more than for Patti LuPone to send her some flowers and a bottle of champagne. I couldn't care less about who plays Grizabella, but given Lloyd Webber's treatment of lots of people involved in his shows, can't say I feel bad for him.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I'm not saying she personally feels she is above doing Cats, I don't know her life, but she should be.

Oh my!  Who cares.  She had a great run in London.  Webber has everything set to bring this turkey back to Broadway.  Can we even calculate how many talented women there are available to play this role and sing the song?  Can we move on to something important like the Sponge Bob musical?

When listening to the full interview, it seems that ALW's words were not as harsh as they seemed when reading them, more playful with a bit of passive-aggressiveness. Hahaha, "She won't get her Tony Award", I love it.

I'm surprised she backed out. I do think being on Broadway would finally bring her some of the US glory she's been seeking. She is going to be in Dirty Dancing so she'll be fine.

Totally agree - we are not casting Rose in GYPSY here. This is a musical that has already had its limelight come and go, and from the perspective of people I have encountered on this forum at least, the show has not exactly held up well over time. Now that everyone knows the song, it would be difficult for an actress to really make an impact in the role I think.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Well, Scherzinger was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Musical at the Oliviers last year.
