The funny thing is, out of the last 4 revivals of Fiddler, the 2004 production was the only one to step out of the box with a new concept in design. The previous revivals were all returns of the original production and only ran between 1-7 months. So, it's not as if the show has been seriously overexposed on Broadway since 1972.

I still think they should get Nathan to do it. He'd be awesome AND get people to actually come see it

Producing Fiddler again isn't going to help anyone's bottom line.

Oy.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

In my opinion this property should be left alone for another 5 years or so. And I know people love DB. But I always find him bland.

No, I didn't. I said:

"If a production has the funding, it happens. All we should expect- and ask for- is that the production is quality."

I agree. I don't find DB to be a must-see performer. He'll be fine in the role. But I don't think it would make me want to jump on getting a ticket.

One doesn't preclude the other. He can do it AND people can bitch about it at the same time.

I am really looking forward to this. Danny Burstein will be amazing. He always is. He is one of the best theater actors currently treading the boards. No doubt in my mind. I am glad he's being rewarded with shows being produced for him. I'm sick of seeing TV stars come in and suck. Isn't it great that they're rewarding a theater star? And a damn good one at that?
And Bartlett Sher is a terrific director.
Mostly, I hope this revival will erase the last one from my memory.

I'd love to see Ana Gasteyer as Golde, and Carol Kane as Yente.

"U all are hypocrites! U all are saying if someone has the money to do a revival then go for it..but then u all bitch and moan about Ryan Murphy doin a funny girl revival with Lea. Oy."

Many though by no mans all of us are saying that if someone has the money to produce a revival of a show that hasn't been revived for about ten years (which is hardly that short a period of time in the scheme of things), that we see no persuasive objection on that basis alone.

That has nothing to do with whatever specific feelings any one might have, positive, neutral, guarded, or negative, about the particular show or the particular star or anything else specific about a particular revival.

You're seeing an inconsistency which just doesn't exist.

Here, you've compared tow two announced revivals. One is to be directed by Bartlett Sher starring Danny Burstein. The other to be produced by Ryan Murphy starring Lea Michele. One can be equally please or displeased about these two projects.

But being more or less enthusiastic about one of them than one is about the other hardly makes one a hypocrite.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Did I miss something? Was Danny Burstein actually announced as Tevye?

Any theatre speculation? I'm interested in seeing where this ends up. Updated On: 11/1/14 at 12:26 PM

I can think of a reason to revive Fiddler, but I can guarantee that my view will cause controversy. I didn't see the 2004 revival, but if I understand the complaints , the revival portrayed the townspeople as suffering because the Czar did not believe in freedom, instead of because of anti-Semitism. Frankly, I find such an interpretation (if that's how events were indeed interpreted) to be so insensitive, it's almost anti-Semitic itself.

Recently, there has been an uptick in anti-Semitism in Europe and the US, probably because many people are angry at the Israeli government. Sometimes, that anger boils over into denying that Israel has the right to exist, and into flawed news reports that come close to implying that the UN gave a bunch of Jews land in a functioning Arab country, and the Israelis proceeded to attack the Arabs in 1948 to steal even more land. A revival of Fiddler, if it goes back to its roots as a show that portrays the Jewish experience, can lower the vitriol by showing us (i.e., Jewish people) as human beings just like other human beings, and by showing what our forebears went through not so long ago because of bigotry and hate.

As I said, I know this post is controversial, but I believe that now is EXACTLY the time to revive "Fiddler on the Roof," albeit for reasons having nothing to do with the bottom line.

I have never seen a production of Fiddler which did not present the suffering of the Jews of Anatevka as a result of both anti-Semitism and Czarist repression of religious freedom (the tow are largely coextensive). And that includes the last revival. All of that is an inextricable part of the libretto, which, as I recall, remained intact in the last revival (with perhaps minor modifications).
