Well, it lost best book to Gentleman's Guide, I'm thrilled to see, and lost best score to the dreary Bridges, which is the one gratifying thing about that award.
"Main Mazzie wins the Outer Critics Circle Award but doesn't score a Tony nomination ..."
This is one of the most puzzling Tony Award decisions. For a long time she was considered either the front runner or close to the front runner for winning this award but wasn't even nominated? Sometimes I wonder with an administrative error was made :P.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Geez A8-you just couldn't leave Fun Home well enough alone, could you.
I was already pissed off that it failed to take book or score (particularly score), but you had to trounce on that, didn't you, you miserable, grizzled old malcontent. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean there aren't people who do.
If Fun Home had moved this season, it would have won. These awards now will go to the Broadway shows running, so I guess you'll have plenty of opportunities to stomp all over the hearts of the people who really loved that show. And who are eagerly awaiting news of its transfer for next season.)
Please don't take out your frustration and disappointment that your pet show didn't win everything in sight on me. It's childish and petulant. And it's not nice to call people names either.
Just because you worship a show doesn't mean everyone needs to. Nor does it mean it needs to win every award in sight either. Or any award at all, for that matter.
Stomping on hearts? Please. I'm just commenting on awards like everyone else here. Or are you saying there's only one reaction allowed?
Actually, you're just illustrating what I've been saying all along: mouth the party line ----or else!
I must say I expected better from you.
But be patient. Next spring, it'll sweep into town and rake in all the Tony Awards you can think of. And you'll be able to exult to your heart's content.
Honestly, while I love Marin Mazzie and usually find her spectacular, I agree with the Tony nominators not giving her a slot in Featured Actress. Something happened in the process of translation and the role lost all the things that made it special on film. I blame it on the poor script and bad direction and the fact the songs add nothing to the script. Cordero, on the other hand, had a knockout role. Dreaming, it sucks FUN HOME wasn't more awarded. Listening to the cast recording, it's such an interesting score/show. I'm still trying to get "into" it 100%, but the same thing happened with CAROLINE, OR CHANGE and that is now in my top 3 al time favorite musicals.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I think the best course of action is to ignore AfterHate and his constant hatred toward shows that are (mostly) universally loved. If no one responds to his posts then he will hopefully stop trying to get a rouse out of everyone.
"Pardon my prior Mcfee slip. I know how to spell her name. I just don't know how to type it." -Talulah
Delighted for BRIDGES score, Jefferson Mays and Nick Cordero---all my hoped-for picks. Now, if only the Tonys would follow suit. Ah--if only. Updated On: 5/12/14 at 10:40 AM
I'm more surprised that Marin Won the Outer Critics then she didn't get a TONY nom. She is a wonderful Actress/Singer but the role was not developed well for the Musical.
It is interesting to see Cordero getting a lot of (well-deserved) attention. He does make something special of the character, sings great and dances in the most noticed dance routine in the show. It appears to me he is eclipsing James Iglehart who many were predicting would easily take the Featured Awards. Also the PR people of Bullets are doing a great job of getting Nick's face out everywhere on the net and TV. As usual Disney does not seem to be pushing James as strongly. They are featuring him in their spotlighted numbers but I notice the costumes and hunky dancers more than him in those spots. (but that's just me).
According to Riedel, Mazzie needed like, two more votes to have gotten a Tony nomination. Adrienne Lenox (I think) reportedly was in "5th place" and beat her by a nose.
Also, the Tonys and OCC have absolutely nothing in common with each other. I predict that Inglehart will win the Tony.
