With every musical of the season either open or in previews I thought it might be fun to have some predictions about what the likely nominees might choose to perform for the show.

For example:
Best Musical:
Matilda: "When I Grow Up" or "Naughty"
Kinky Boots: "Everybody Say Yeah"
Hands on a Hardbody (if still open/they choose to perform): "Joy of the Lord"
Motown: Some sort of medley

Best Revival:
Pippin: "Magic to Do" or maybe "Glory"
Drood (if they choose to perform): "Writing on the Wall" or "Don't Quit While You're Ahead"
Annie: "Tomorrow"
Cinderella: Not familiar with the show but maybe the number at the ball they did at the parade

I think it really depends on who gets nominated. Each show will want to show off their nominees.

I haven't seen Cinderella but have tickets in a couple of weeks. Can some elaborate on something for me? I've seen Cinderella on quite a few shows doing songs I think aren't the most well known and haven't really shown the "transformation" into the dress. Is that something that has to be done in theatre for it to work? If they did it on the TONYS to give a "sneak peek", tickets would for sure sell!

They wouldn't do that, for the same reason THE PRODUCERS didn't do "Springtime for Hitler." You don't give away your big moment for free on TV.

I could be proven wrong, but I don't think so.

I also think that, if DROOD performs, they will choose a solo or duet so that they don't have to call back the entire ensemble. Maybe "Perfect Strangers," since I could see Betsy Wolfe nominated. If they could get everyone, it would be wonderful to see one of the ensemble numbers, but who knows?

This is a big if, but if CHAPLIN performs, they would probably do "Tramp Shuffle." That, or "Where Are All the People." Show off McClure.

Personally, I doubt Betsy Wolfe will be nominated for featured. Both Chita Rivera and Jessie Mueller have, IMO, a better shot than her. She also did not perform for the extension, so less people had the opportunity to see her.

The best number for Drood to perform is "Don't Quit While You're Ahead". Sure, there may be issues getting the entire ensemble, but if Roundabout is going to put up the money for them to perform, I can't imagine they'll do a number their big above-the-title stars (Chita especially) are not in. However, because Stephanie J. Block is not in this number and I believe she'll be nominated this year, so I would not be surprised if they went with "The Writing on the Wall", which I think would also play wonderfully.

That being said, I don't think it's really likely that they'll perform at all because of the cost of doing it and the show's not being open anymore, but I truly hope they do.

I am guessing Cinderella will do that same medley of Impossible/ Waltz/ Ten minutes ago. They could switch it up and do The prince is giving a ball, though.

I'd like them to do the "The Prince Is Giving A Ball" into "Impossible".

If Pippin performs, my guess is that they'd be more likely to do "Corner of the Sky" or "Simple Joys." The latter would allow them to show off the acrobats, whereas "Corner.." is the most popular song from the show. I don't know that they'd want to do their opening number, and "Glory" is kind of long for television.

Another solo from DROOD that's perfectly capable of being excised for television, depending of course on who gets nominated, is "A Man Could Go Quite Mad." Especially as a showcase for Will, who really is underrated (I think) in this year's Tony race. Or at least underremembered.

Matilda has gone with both "When I Grow Up" and "Naughty" in the past, when the London cast has been asked to perform on television. I imagine that, since the former segues into a reprise of the latter, a proper medley of the two is a very likely scenario. They also did bit once with all four Matildas in London doing a quartet version of "Naughty," but "When I Grow Up" is the money moment and so perfect to excerpt for the Tony's (especially since it has almost naught to do with the plot and is so perfect a song in its own understandable context that it's practically a standard already.)

Motown will do a medley. The whole show, apparently, is medleys. The question is what medley they want to do, more like.

If I'm Cinderella, I'm doing "Ten Minutes Ago," since it might be the most perfect song R&H ever wrote, but they've liked varying it up a bit with medleys so a medley of "In My Own Little Corner"/"Impossible"/"Ten Minutes Ago" would be a way to spotlight each of their three main players (a la South Pacific a few years ago, which while not the best way to present each song was a great way to present the show as a whole.)

If Hardbody lasts, they have to do "Joy of the Lord." They're in the position where they have to give away the store to get the audience they need, so go straight to the showstopper in their case, and sell audiences on the drama of the contest's resolution.

Also, if we're talking longshots, in the event that Hardbody shutters and manages to fail to get the nomination, one possible usurper is Chaplin, and since Rob is almost a lock to get a nomination "Where Are All the People?" might show up at the Tony's, as it was the one good solo in that show...

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I can see them opening the show with a Motown number. Most people know the music. Excuse me EVERYBODY knows the music. Great if they started the show outside the theater, with Dancing in the Streets.

Also depends who the host will be.

It's been a pretty good year, so I can see them opening with a mega medley of all the nominees like they did in 2009.

If not, I hope they open with Magic to do, it's a perfect opening, IMO. Updated On: 4/6/13 at 07:46 PM

Kelly2, I can't believe I'm correcting you on something Drood related... Stephanie J. Block is indeed in "Don't Quit While You're Ahead" as Datchery! The song features just about everyone in the show. Perfect showcase for all the actors.

MEMPHIS is going to perform again, right?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I highly, highly doubt they would do "No Time At All." Probably "Magic To Do." "Morning Glow" would also be great.

For Pippin, it will probably depend on who is nominated. If both Patina Miller and Matthew James Thomas are nominated, I could see them doing 'On the Right Track', but if they are both nominated, (and having seen it, I know Patina will be and I have my fingers crossed that Matthew will be too, and honestly he should be), then chances are Andrea will be nominated too and they will want to show her off. But I could see them doing a medley.

You're right! My bad! I am very ashamed on this day. I'd love to see them do that number in any case, it's probably my favorite in the show. Anyone know what the odds are Roundabout will pony up for a performance? My instinct is "very low".

I hope they do something to incorporate Bertie Carvel for Matilda (a medley perhaps).

I think if they can get the Drood cast together, they should do "There You Are" with the cast members in the audience-imagine some of the famous people who'll be there and with whom the actors/actresses can interact.

My favorite song from Pippin is "Corner of the Sky". But, I think they'll do something to showcase the circus aspect more. ("Magic to Do" seems likely.)

Cinderella-Please do "Impossible". I want to see Victoria Clark perform on the Tonys! I think that into "Ten Minutes Ago" would be perfect-do the transformation at Radio City. It would be lovely. In all seriousness, I think they will likely do some kind of ball scene.

Kinky Boots-"Everybody Say Yeah".

Annie-Tomorrow (and I could see them doing a medley with "I Don't Need Anything But You"-Warlow will almost certainly be nominated).

Mowtown-Some kind of medley.

There is no way they should do one of the Cinderella transformations at the Tony award show. Not only for the good reason stated in a previous post about not doing your big moment for free, but also because they wouldn't want people recording it and then going through it frame by frame trying to see how it's done. Spoils all the fun, ya know?

with Hardbody set to close, I wonder if they'll perform. Leap of Faith performed last year, so if Hardbody gets nominated, why not??

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

All nominated shows are invited to perform. Always. For shows that have closed, it is more difficult to get the actors and costumes back together, as well as more expensive because the performance is now a separate contract, because the original contract has ended (I believe).

LEAP OF FAITH performed because the producers were willing to put up the money so that everyone could see their show. Not all producers will be willing, or able, to.
