I guess you have no knowledge about the singing qualifications of CABARET, so I'll be nice but... none of the roles in CABARET require excellent singing voices -- not even Sally Bowles, and especially the Emcee. Sally is supposed to be a third-rate singer working in a seedy Berlin cabaret therefore the Emcee is equally third-rate. Lucky enough, the recent 1998 Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall Broadway revival was cast this way hence the varied actors and actresses who appeared in the revival during its long run. Great singing voices were not on the criteria and actors who DID know how to sing purposely sang their roles 'in character' and altered their great singing voices (some added a grittier, raspier tone to their slightly off-key vocals, etc.).
Also, Ricky Martin's singing has never been questioned -- it was his acting abilities that were always on the attack on this board. His singing is up-to-par on many levels. The boy's acting needs work.

Posted: 3/21/13 at 11:31amI dont need Ricky Martin's "fans" ruining another show. Cabaret is not interactive but sadly his fans would think they are in a club and can talk to the actor.

He just doesn't have the ability to create a character on stage, he's a personality, not an actor--same goes for John Stamos, for that matter though at least he's been known to have charisma whereas Broadway sucks all the charisma out of Martin for some reason. Pass.

Posted: 3/21/13 at 4:14pmAs much as I'd like the thought of his heaving bosoms covered in grease and glitter, it's a no-go for me. Dude is charismatic, but can't act and can only barely do singing legit, not to mention his distracting focus on enunciation. I love Ricky since I was a kid, but I know charisma can't cover all that is lacking.

His Che was so exhaustingly peppy, hammy, and bubbly that he may as well have been a Wiggle.
Please don't let him touch The MC. He's not untalented, his acting range is just...limited.

No it won't be happy! I think you're all underestimating his talents.
If you've seen him live in concert you then you know how dark he could get. In his last tour he had an orgy on stage with both men and woman and trust me there wasn't anything "happy" about it. It was pure and raw erotic magic.
In Evita he was "selling" the show, as instructed by the producers. Sadly people came to see the charismatic, livin la vida loca Ricky, not Che. It wasn't his choice, he acted as directed, with the right director he could be spectacular.

I would hate to see Sasha Baron Cohen OR Ricky Martin in the role for two very different reasons.
Ricky Martin homogenized Che. He made Che bland; uninteresting and really had no characterization whatsover. I'm sure he would sell tickets: I'm sure legions would be disappointed.
Sasha Baron Cohen is a funny man when he does his own stuff.. Borat or That gay model guy. Given a real script that another person wrote........ such as Les Miserables. He just doesn't quite cut it.
There were so many good Emcees last time around Micheal C Hall, Raul Esparza, Alan Cumming, Neil Patrick Harris, all actors who brought so much to it. I think of Sasha Baron Cohen more of a sketch artist. Yet to see him enjoyable that moves that are not his

The only critique we had about Martin's performance was that there were a few moments when the heartthrob went into "Ricky" mode and channeled his inner idol. HOWEVER, that is not a lazy choice on his part. The director told us backstage, when we mentioned that (because we like to be honest), that it was his idea for Martin to do that. To give the audience a little of Ricky along with Che. Because, let's be more frank, it is Martin that is helping Evita do huge box office business.

Posted: 3/21/13 at 6:46pmI know Perez is not a theatre critic, I didn't post that for the review aspect of it, but for the information it provides, that he was directed to act the way he did for commercial reasons. If given creative freedom to interpret a role he could be quite extraordinary.

I think Stamos is a pretty solid Emcee here. He's certainly holding the stage. And someone may remember, but I think Kander liked Stamos in the role.
