Yes South Pacific was allowed to run its course but after was such a hit and then War Horse as well the NYTimes did a sunday editorial on this last year on it and how the government was looking ti audit them because of it, whichbis why they want War Horse out of the Boumont

SO the 2012 Tony's are now OVER.

WHat will go next?

I believe it shall be
Godspell and
Jesus Christ Superstar

Based on the horrid performances, low ticket sales and the norm.

yes, I know it's not Broadway, but that cruise-ship production of Hairspray looks like it's about to sink (pun intended.....). They can't even feed poor skinny Tracy

Ghost or the Lyons
JSCS is going to try and run the summer because they donated a whole bunch of tickets to PBS for July 10th and 11th for them to use during the Love Never Dies donation special...and their is no way to refund for those tickets since they are donations.

By no means, does this make me happy in any way (due to the number of people who will be out of work as a result), but:

"Other Desert Cities" (6/17; previously announced)
"Venus in Fur" (6/17; previously announced)
"Don't Dress for Dinner" (6/17; previously announced)
"The Lyons" (I'd say 6/17 or 6/24)
"Priscilla" (6/24; previously announced)
"Godspell" (6/24; previously announced tentatively)
"The Columnist" (7/8; previously announced)

Others on the chopping block:
"Streetcar" - wouldn't be surprised to see it go before its announced closing of 8/19

"Ghost" -- gone by or before Labor Day

"JCS" -- see "Ghost"

"Porgy & Bess" -- announced thru 9/30, but I'm skeptical. Labor Day or sooner seems more likely.

"End of the Rainbow" -- I'm guessing Labor Day.

"One Man, Two Guvnors" -- whenever Corden is done.

"Peter and the Star Catcher" is a big question mark. Not doing the numbers it needs to be doing but some deep pockets there and a lot of Tony momentum, albeit in four tech categories that don't sell tickets and an acting category where the person is leaving. Has a shot at making it to the end of the year, but depends what kind of gamblers they are.

I think Peter and the Starcatchers will stay awhile after last night.

At least, it got people curious.

End of the Rainbow has already announced its closing Labor day in preparation for a National tour and another London engagement...

Peter is definitely hitting its nut and I wouldn't be surprised if Disney takes over the show

I certainly hope "Peter" is around for a long time. LOVED the show.

That said, while it's operating profitably, it's not operating at very far over its breakeven. If they don't see a boost in the near term from the Tony "heat" (which is less certain given the categories it won), they will have a very rough go of it come Sept/Oct. Absent star casting, unless someone (like a Disney) wants to stand behind it in a more substantial way, the prudent thing to do might still be to close around Labor Day. Or perhaps limp through Sept/Oct and close at the end of the year. But either way, I don't see them facing Jan/Feb, and I'm not sure there's very much even the marketing arm of Disney can do to change that -- but if they can, I'd be thrilled!

While I do doubt it (as it is out of the normal fashion - but they are doing that a lot lately and I LOVE it), it wouldn't surprise me if Disney eventually takes over PETER over at some point. Just that logo being there would bring in more crowds.

I'm still shocked that The Lyons hasn't announced anything yet. I guess they are waiting to see if the new cast change will boost sales otherwise they will probably close.

Broadway.com has an article about all the shows closing and why people should go see them. In the intro it says that they are all huge "crowd-pleasers"

Obviously not pleasing enough.

I was at End of the Rainbow last night and it was virtually empty. I'll be surprised if it lasts until Labor Day.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ghost hangs in there for longer than expected, actually. I think the initial cost of it was pretty high, but I don't think the running costs are as astronomical as they look when you see the show (i.e. it looks a lot more expensive than it is). And while it wasn't critically acclaimed, my guess is it will get a lot more repeat visitors than JCS or Godspell, who, while they don't make that much of an impact on grosses themselves, do generate buzz and word of mouth.

keb2, I agree. With all of the automation it must take less people-power than other Broadway shows. The orchestra must also not be that large from what I hear on the recording, probably the theatre minimum in the pit and it doesn't have any real stars. Levy is probably the highest paid in the cast, Rudolph might be in negotiations for a raise since her nomination. But it doesn't look like it takes a lot to run that show.

As long as it last til July 14th I'm happy though hahah
