This sounds like a recipe for seeing a lot of bad shows on topics you would like if they were done well?

I can see not only going by reviews, but if everyone is saying a show isn't that great...
"

I thought it was better than not great. At least a 7/10. With the NYT business, it seems like we're all supposed to agree this was a terrible, braindead show with no redeeming qualities except a talented, hardworking cast. I liked what it was trying to do and found it largely successful in its aims, if a bit lacking in depth. I appreciated that it wanted to tell a story that centered joy more than trauma. I understand why they structured the final concert as a catharsis the way they did but I wish they'd figured out a way to explore the characters without Harry's influence, as that only seemed to happen in flashback. I thought the show made interesting choices with diegetic music and allowing the actors' performances to convey things outside of dialogue. I genuinely found the performances emotionally engaging. Kevin Woo is wildly charismatic. Jully Lee gave a very strong and affecting performance carrying much of the book scenes. There were so many dynamic and exciting performers on that stage who reflected back aspects of Asian identity, gender, and queerness that I instinctively recognized and that deeply resonated with me. Unfortunately, those things will get lost on a cast album and I don't know how much choreography changed between press performances and when the show was frozen.

I actually do enjoy reading reviews and there have been some that give the show its due while acknowledging its flaws. A useful review should describe the production and give enough analysis for someone to form their own opinion about whether a show is appealing. Shallow critiques, dismissiveness, etc. are pointless unless you always agree with that critic's opinions or you just want to read snark. Helen Shaw's reviews have value to me even though I don't always agree with her about shows.

Anyway, all the best to the cast and creatives. I'm especially interested in seeing what Helen Park does next. I primed myself to see the show by watching her 54 Below concert and it put me in the right headspace to accept KPOP as it is and as it wants to be. She's clearly talented and has a voice and something of value to contribute. I hope it isn't too long until she gets her next big opportunity.

Did anyone do sro recently? If so what time would you recommend I get in line for the Saturday matinee? Should I get there early in the morning?

My sister did SRO for us yesterday and she got there around 4:30 and was 2nd in line. I don't think you have to get there too early, especially for the matinee. They gave out the tickets at 6. Of course by then 3 more people had joined the 1 person was ahead of her in line, so overall she ended up being 5th but we got SRO and the view is great!

The show’s Instagram will go live for the entire concluding concert sequence at 5 PM tomorrow, for the final performance.

Not that anyone is surprised, but the #saveKPOPbroadway campaign was unsuccessful according to members of the company. There was no time to make it an actually viable option.

I asked at the box office yesterday and they said no, there won't be standing room on Sunday.

That Instagram live of the final concert performance was awesome!
I agree that having less than a week for the savekpop campaign wasn’t enough time. I know in nyc this past week was quite busy with people going to holiday-related events/parties/concerts.
I have a feeling this show will go to Korea and hopefully it will build from there.

I'm glad the cast were able to get a warm sendoff, at least. It looks like they got a lot of last minute support. I saw that LMM attended/posted about it this weekend, as well as Aaron Tveit + Ericka Hunter Yang. Some cast members from Hadestown, Hamilton, Almost Famous stopped by the celebration in the Gershwin Alley as well.

I will say, I was surprised (and a little sad) to see nothing from Ashley Park about the show, given that she played MwE in the off-broadway version. I honestly thought she'd at least post a supportive ig story or something. I guess she's busy doing Emily In Paris promo though. Or maybe she didn't want to post about it because she has a bigger non-theatre following now / didn't want to post anything that would be controversial to her followers (given the NYT drama)

I saw that Andrew Yang also went to see KPOP this last week.

I thought the same thing -- I'm sure she's just very busy, but I'd have loved for her to make the time to wish them well.

Does anyone know if they filmed this for the archives? I recall a few creatives said they were fighting for it during closing week.
