I gotta admit it.  Mayor Pete makes me want to be a Dem again.  I also don't believe that he should have to bear the cross for every embattled non-minority mayor/city manager who hasn't cracked the policing/community engagement nut.  With each passing day, his general election negatives become less so.  But, is it too late for his 2020 presidential prospects? What are his chances against Iowa's current GOP governor Kim Reynolds when she comes up for reelection in 2022?

Mayor Pete doesn’t have much chance of garnering the nomination and if he does, even less chance of beating Trump. His two biggest liabilities are that a good chunk of voters still won’t vote for a gay man to be president and his lack of experience. He is a mayor of a town with a whopping 101,168 residents. Yes, I know he is still vastly qualified over Trump, but that’s true of most, if not all (I’m looking at you Williamson) the Democratic candidates. I think he’d be wise to run for governor of his state or congress when the opportunity next presents itself then run again in 8 or more years when he has more years of experience and attitudes have progressed more but he has opened a major door for future LGBT candidates regardless.

Bernie and Warren came out on top last night and were lucky not to have been a part of tonight’s ugly dogfight. Buttigieg also had a good showing and is likable and earnest. Not sure if any of them can beat Trump still. Williamson was surprisingly cogent last night and had some great moments, but also comes across as substanceless.

Biden looked pretty careworn up there. I REALLY hope he doesn’t get the nomination because Trump will eat him alive and his policy is just not progressive enough to fire up younger voters the way Obama was able to.

Yang acquitted himself well tonight with the limited time CNN gave him. His closing statement was excellent. He’d make a better cabinet member than President at this stage, IMO. Everyone else cannibalized themselves, notably Gabbard finally calling out Harris on her record. Gabbard herself was cancelled out by her own forgettableness.

I don’t think Biden was stellar. Harris is now in the front of the pack so was now attacked more. I actually thought Booker, Gabbard, and Gillibrand did the best. I think de Blasio just doesn’t come across well.

As far as a Biden - Trump match up. I think Biden still probably has the best chance to beat Trump although less so after these fumbling debate performances. Yes, he’s not gonna play well with progressive millennials, but even my millennial friend who is more progressive than I am thinks he’s best shot although she’s not excited about it. Honestly, neither am I. We need to remember Obama wasn’t a progressive on most issues. Yes, times have changed a bit, but not that much in moderate middle America and with many undecideds which are crucial for 2020.

The loser last night imho was CNN.  The debate format was disastrous.  It was like watching really bad reality TV.

I found Corey Booker particularly annoying in full on shaite stirrer/drama queen mode.  His record as Newark NJ mayor is not flawless a fact on which Biden could have expounded further had he not been hemmed in by the debate format and the surfeit of folks on stage.  It was nice to see someone finally keep Kamala Harris honest even though I'm cooling on Tulsi Gabbard.

I'll be making contributions to the campaigns of Mayor Pete and Kirsten Gillibrand later today.  I'd like to see Buttigieg, Gillibrand, Biden, Warren, Harris, Inslee, Castro, and Tim Ryan on the stage in Sep.  I don't give Buttigieg, Gillibrand, Inslee, or Ryan much of a chance with respect to the nomination, but they along with Biden provide an excellent counterweight to the hard left wing of the party.

What worries me most about Warren and Harris is their choice of likely running mate, or more like who would say no to them if asked.  Warren's strident class warfare and Harris' duplicity on private health insurance give me pause, and pit them against a few candidates who could improve their electoral college math.  Harris can't have it both ways.  More at Private Insurance Can't Survive under KamalaCare

Biden no longer excites me but he remains my favorite to topple Trump.  Why did Bill De Blasio enter the race?  Bernie is Bernie.

Re: Biden being the best shot... I'm so torn. I acknowledge that he's leading in the polls and has the most name recognition right now and has the aura of "safety" around him, which might court moderates. Still, I'm worried he might inspire a lot of apathy among crucial voting blocks that we desperately need to show up at the polls. I just wish he had more passion in this campaign. He just seems to be putting in the minimum effort -- both in terms of policy platform and in his showings these debates. His claim to the ticket is basically "You already know me. It's me, Uncle Joe from Obama. Remember Obama? Wasn't that great?" Most polls put him ahead of Trump, but then we saw what happened with the polls in 2016.

At this rate, I think the Democrats' best bet is just to hope that animosity towards Trump is high enough for people just to go: "Anyone but him." Trump is very polarizing. After four years of him, it's pretty much impossible to have a neutral opinion on him: you either love him or you hate him. You either belief he's been unfairly targeted by the media and painted as the next Hitler, or you believe those portrayals are justified. I feel that people already know which party they WOULD mark on the ballot a year from now IF they bothered to go to the polls, and it doesn't matter as much whose name is there once they're there. The issue is getting enough people to turn up at the polls. Trump's base votes, and they live in places where their votes hold a disproportionate impact on the Electoral counts. The Democratic base is much less dependable. Updated On: 8/1/19 at 11:02 AM

I'm in the Warren column now but that can change.  There is a puppet comic, I forget his name, but he has an old man puppet that looks just like Joe.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but why do you think that? I think she was one of the more effective debaters, possibly the most effective, this week. After I’ve had time to debrief the debates this week, I think Sanders and Warren are two of the front runners especially after this week. And I’d add Harris and Biden to that list although not based on their debate performances this week. One of those four will be our Democratic nominee.

Roughly one-third of Democratic primary voters still want the former vice president to lead party

List of Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign endorsements

To date, Biden, Booker, Buttigieg, Harris, Klobuchar, O'Rourke, Sanders, and Warren have qualified for the next Democratic debate in Sep.  Yang & Castro are on the cusp of booking passage to the third debate.

Like I wrote before, Biden no longer excites me but I'm confident he could deliver the goods in the general election.  Any other election, I'd favor either Warren, Harris, Klobuchar, or Gillibrand.

I watched CNN and they pointed out some things I hadn’t thought about at least exactly that way.

Many of the candidate Wednesday night chose to attack Obama (mainly because Biden uses him as a shield). However:

Poles show 85% of Democrats have a favorable view of Obama.

When poled, Obama got the highest percentage when respondents were asked who the best president was in their lifetime.

When asked, 99% of African American Democratic respondents ranked Obama favorably with only 1% undecided.

Biden is the only one who was really defending/praising Obama so it’s no surprise when respondents were asked which candidate is most likely to build on policies of Obama, Biden got the overwhelming most percentages.

Going forward candidates need to reframe their answers to attack Trump more and attack Obama (and each other) less.

Trump would destroy Biden in a campaign, theres simply way too much for him and his base to work with. Its early and his name is most recognizable. His debate performances have been laughable in my opinion. He can't be our nominee unless people want Trump for another 4 years. Polls are meaningless, look at 2016.

I’ll say two things;

Hillary wiped the floor withTrump at every debate and he still won the presidency.

The polls is 2016 said Hillary had a better chance than Trump of winning, but as I recall they still said he had a chance and if she won it would likely be close.. It really came down to three states that voted red that would have probably voted blue if Hillary had campaigned in them.

Okay, a third thing: look, Biden doesn’t excite me. I don’t know that he can beat Trump. I don’t know if any of them can. Polls predicting how people will vote in 15 months can’t help but be inaccurate. But those numbers in my previous post are overwhelming. If candidates want to win over key demographics, in future debates they need to quit attacking Obama (to get at Biden) and each other and attack Trump instead. No one thinks any of their plans would be instituted as they stand now if they were elected.

Well said. I think we do seriously need to take in Russian Meddling as well. To win, I fear the Democrats need a much more overhwleming majority and turnout to win. Its not going to be easy with any of them which I can fully understand. Biden would do worse in debates with Trump than Hillary, which I don't think hurts us per say but it certainly doesn't help. Having Biden go into the general just feels like a re-hash of 2016 and shows we didn't learn anything at all. Just worried.

Yeah, my point is that with Obama being so popular with the Democratic electorate, if the candidates want to hand the nomination to Biden all they have to do is continue attacking Obama as a way to attack Biden.

Joe needs to do well during a debate until he gets any recognition from me. Thats what will matter a lot for going against Trump and he has failed to bring the goods. Its early, but certainly not promising.

Well, Biden saying poor kids are as smart as white kids is just horrendous. How do any of you, as Democrats, support him? I ask this genuinely, and non judgmentally. You all know my feelings for him but I am genuinely curious where the support comes from.

Biden is the walking talking example of  some the lack of awareness of what white privilege really means. He sounds like the typical woke white man who still subconsciously considers white as the standard, the norm, the base line, the default starting point that everyone else is measured against and is the only race in America that doesn't need to be hyphenated. It's so ingrained in some people (of his generation especially) that he's not even aware of it. He's the reason we need anything but an old white man running things. And I say that as a middle-aged white man.
