Strand Theater Presents Festival: WORKS FOR WOMEN June 3 - 26

The Strand Theater announces its second annual Friends and Neighbors Festival: Works by Women, sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council. The Friends and Neighbors Festival, includes a diverse group of up-and-coming female playwrights. Over four weeks in June, a new work will be featured at the Strand each weekend. The Stoop Storytelling Series is delighted to present 'Cool. Cruel. High School,' a live radio show commemorating the pain and pleasure of that most curious of institutions. We'll wax poetic and comedic about nerds and jocks; the marching band; the prom; those creepy sex-ed films from Health class; and so much more. It's our love (hate?) letter to high school: 'Rebel without a Cause' meets 'The Outsiders,' crossed with 'Breakfast Club' and 'Glee.'

This time around, the legendary legend, in his never-ending quest to aid the needy, encounters a lovely damsel-in-distress (oddly obsessed with skin conditions); an ever-scheming sheriff who would rather bowl a strike than hit a bulls eye; a gold-hoarding, bad-guy monarch wannabe; and a good-natured 'Town's Guy', who manages to make his way into every scene, whether he belongs there or not.

Having been the first to bring shows such as Jerry Herman's La Cage aux Folles, Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl - The Musical, Mel Brooks' The Producers, as well as a regional theatre premiere production of The Wedding Singer to western Maryland audiences, Way Off Broadway is adding the musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to the list of firsts.

Silver Spring Stage presents George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy PYGMALION, directed by Pauline Griller-Mtichell and produced by Richard Ley, when fussy English professor Henry Higgins wagers that he can transform a guttersnipe cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady of breeding, voice, and manners. Pygmalion will perform weekends June 4 to June 27.

Silhouette Stages, Inc. announces the regional premiere production of the celebrated musical within a comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone on May 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8 pm and May 23 and 30 at 3 pm. All performances will take place at Slayton House on 14100 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia, MD 21044. Conni Ross and Debra Mobley direct this modern masterpiece with choreography by Lori Pryor and Timoth David Copney and music direction by Keith Tittermary. Tickets are $15 or $12 for students and seniors and will be sold at the door.

Everyone can enjoy a visit to our galleries for the Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2010 and Contrast & Symmetry in June and HoCo Open 2010 and No Boundaries in July and August. Local performing artists and painters are invited to participate in one of our Open Mic Nights on June 17 and July 8 or our plein air paint out, Paint It! Ellicott City ! The Strand Theater will mark its second anniversary with Open House: Celebrating Community on Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. During its short tenure, the Strand has seen great success, producing eight full-length season plays, all of which were Baltimore premieres. With a focus on community, the Strand has made its mark by providing affordable theater space to over 15 organizations, serving more than 5,000 patrons, and playing an integral role in the revitalization of the Station North Arts & Entertainment District.

Drama Learning Center Presents '13' 6/11-19

Fresh off of Broadway, 13, the musical will premiere locally at the Drama Learning Center in Columbia, MD. This rock musical, performed by Teaching Young Actors, DLC's Teen Professional Company, follows Evan Goldman, a nice Jewish boy from NYC's upper eastside who is forced to move to Indiana with his mother after his parents get a divorce. To make matters worse, Evan is on the verge of being Bar Mitzvhed (For you gentiles that means he's becoming a 'man'). The chaos that ensues is truly hilarious, real, and heartfelt. The lyrics and music are by Jason Robert Brown, based on the book by Dan Elish & Robert Horn.
HoCo Open 2010 Opens For Submissions 6/28

HoCo Open 2010 is a non-juried exhibit held biennially at the Howard County Center for the Arts (HCCA), 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City. Adults, 18 years and older, who live, work or study in Howard County are invited to submit one piece of original artwork completed in the past two years. Artwork drop-off is 4:00-6:00 p.m. on June 28th at the HCCA. Artwork will be accepted for the exhibit on a first-come, first-serve basis, one piece per artist, until the gallery is full.

The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre is preparing to welcome Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang for a special presentation of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown this spring. The family friendly musical based on the Charles M. Schulz comic strip will play a limited engagement of four performances only at the theatre. Known for its Mainstage productions, which have included regional premieres as well as, classic Broadway productions, and its one-of-a-kind Children's Theatre, which bring original musical adaptations of fairytales to life on the stage, Way Off Broadway is set to blend the two for what is being billed as a 'Family Theatre' presentation.

One of the most successful and popular theatrical franchises is Dan Goggin's Nunsense series. In all, there are nine different stage productions that revolve around the Little Sisters of Hoboken. This summer, the hilariously funny, gender-bending installment of the collection, Nunsense A-Men!, is set to entertainment audiences at The Way off Broadway Dinner Theatre. The production opens June 25th and runs through August 29th.
