Howard County Arts Council Offers Summer Visual and Performing Arts Camps, 6/23-8/15

Space is still available for visual and performing arts summer camps at the Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) in Ellicott City. Programs are open to the public, regardless of residency in Howard County, for students entering grades K-7. Campers must be a minimum of five years of age by September 1, 2014 to be eligible for summer camp.

Silver Spring Stage presents the community theater premiere of The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmerman adapted from The Book of One Thousand Nights and One Night, directed by Jacy D'Aiutolo and produced by Bob Scott, exciting and breathtaking new take on the magical experience in which Scheherazade's stories, told to save her life, weave an enchanted carpet ride that will both delight the senses and provoke the mind. The Arabian Nights will perform weekends May 16 to June 7, 2014.

Pumpkin Theatre ends its 46th Season 'Discovering New Friendships Through Familiar Tales' with Peter Pan & Wendy. Wendy Darling is a girl on the verge of becoming a young lady and like Peter Pan is having trouble growing up; wishing to stay a child forever. Smee, Captain Hook and of course Tinker Bell join this musical cast in a new telling of this famous tale of adventures in Neverland. Performances take place tonight, May 10, 11, 17, & 18. All shows are at 1 and 3pm and take place at 2905 Walnut Ave, Owings Mills 21117. Everyman Theatre Announces ASL-Interpreted Performances of TRIBES

Everyman Theatre has announced that it will be performing five ASL-interpreted performances of Nina Raine's award-winning play Tribes. The theatre company will also be offering captioned performances for the first time. There will be two captioned performances during the run of the show. The Baltimore premiere is a hysterical and touching coming-of-age story about a young deaf man and his struggle for self-identity. The production will begin performances on May 27th (its Pay What You Can Performance) and will run through June 22nd.
MET to Present 'THE VIBRATOR PLAY,' 5/30-6/22

Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) will present a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist and a 2010 Tony Nominee for Best Play, In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play by Sarah Ruhl. The smart, touching, and hilarious period play will be directed by MET Associate Artistic Director, Julie Herber. In The Next Room will run every Thursday through Sunday at Maryland Ensemble Theatre from May 30 through June 22, 2014.
Peter Davis Debuts Parlor Plays ORANGE! & NUMBER 9 at Church and Company Tonight

Baltimore playwright Peter Davis will present two of his Parlor Plays, 'Orange!' and 'Number 9,' on May 9th and 10th at 7 and 9pm, at Church and Company, 3649 Falls Road in Hampden. In addition, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a staged reading of a third play during each performance. Previews of the plays will be held tonight, May 8 at 8 pm.

Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) will present the original one man show TruthPaste: A Blotto Biography. The show, created by and starring MET Artistic Director Tad Janes, made its World Premiere at MET last March to high praise. In DC Metro Arts' five star review Mike Spain wrote, 'Truthpaste: A Blotto Biography is a fun and crazy, high-energy, quick-changing, real, honest, extremely funny, and one heck of a roller coaster ride. You'll have a great time!'. On bringing the show back Janes said, 'I got such a great response the first time, and have had people say they wanted to see it again or people who didn't get the chance to see it in the first place; so, why not bring it back?'.

Children's Playhouse of Maryland, in residence at the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, will showcase its young adult actors in its production of 'A Chorus Line.' Performances will be 1 p.m. weekends, tonight, May 3 through May 18 in the Administration Building Lecture Hall at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. A 4 p.m. performance on May 11 will be sign language interpreted by students from the Interpreter Preparation program. The show, which is being presented as originally written, contains adult language and content and is not suitable for younger children. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased on line at www.cpmarts.org or from the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-2787 (ARTS) on Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and at the door one hour prior to the performance (space permitting.)

The Spring Dance Concert is a rite of spring at the Community College of Baltimore County. This annual event serves as a showcase for the talents of the dancers in the CCBC Dance Company as well as for original and/or restaged works by CCBC dance faculty and guest artists. The concert will be performed at 11:15 a.m. today, May 1 and 8 p.m. May 2 and 3 in the College Community Center (COMM) Theatre at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard in Rosedale, Md. Tickets are $8 general admission and $5 for seniors, students, faculty, staff and alumni. Current CCBC studentswith IDs are free.

The Howard County Center for the Arts (HCCA) offers affordable studio, teaching, and meeting space to local artists and community-focused arts groups. It is currently home to more than 30 artists and arts organizations through its Resident and Arts Advancement Programs. Artists and arts groups have the opportunity to rent space at the Center for the Arts on a one-time, occasional, or regular basis to create their own programs. Spaces available to rent include: classrooms, a conference room, a dance studio, and the black box theatre. The Center's multipurpose classrooms are great places to hold lessons, workshops, rehearsals, or other arts activities for up to 25 people. The spaces are working studio classrooms with sinks, worktables, and flexible seating.
