BWW Review: FOR PETER PAN ON HER 70TH BIRTHDAY Gentle, Sweet and Mildly Confusing
by Frank Benge - March 01, 2019
FOR PETER PAN ON HER 70TH BIRTHDAY is an autobiographical play by Sarah Ruhl written as a gift to her mother on her 70th birthday. Like the character of Ann in the play, her mother also played Peter Pan when she was a teenager. What Ruhl has crafted is a gentle look at a loving and supportive family and how they deal with death, their views on life, and how theatre offers the allure of never having to grow up.

BWW Review: Tom Stoppard's INDIAN INK Shares the Humanity Behind British Imperialism at The Rollins Theatre in Austin, Tx.
by Amy Tarver - February 22, 2019
Tom Stoppard is regarded as one of the greatest living playwrights of our day. His time spent in India in the 1940's as a boy, no doubt influenced the author's point of view in writing INDIAN INK. By modern terms, Stoppard's writing would be described as a slow burn, with a style gradually revealing plot and character as the play progresses. In INDIAN INK, the scenes travel long distances in both space and time, to reveal the heart of Flora Crewe played by Jill Blackwood. Examining the imperial British rule in early 20th century India - the clash of cultures between India and the British, display both the casualties and inspiration of such a combination. At the heart of our story Flora leaves England for a warmer climate amid advice from her doctor for her failing health. The story jumps back and forth between Flora navigating India in the early 1900's to more modern times detailing a biographer and her sister investigating the aftermath of her fascinating life. The story gently exposes itself as a subtle tale of love in many capacities. Love between sisters, scholarly love and the forbidden budding relationship between Flora and her portrait artist Nirad Das (played by Tamil Periasamy). As described of Flora throughout the show, her many affairs were fleeting, which made the building of her love for Nirad sweet, leaving the audience wanting more.
BWW Review: Filling Pockets…At Any Cost. A Review of Street Corner Arts' JUNK
by Madelyn Geyer - February 21, 2019
'This is a story of kings.' The opening line of playwright Ayad Akhtar's JUNK gives the audience an epic summary of what they're about to experience. Kings not determined by the biggest crown or most expansive army, but by the fullest pockets. Robert Merkin, played by Carlo Lorenzo Garcia, is one such king, though unconventional in that the lead character of Akhtar's longest work sees debt as an asset. Robert sits proudly on the cover Time Magazine, and he's ready to capitalize on his role as 'America's Alchemist'. Performer Garcia revels in all the teeth sucking, furtive gesticulating, and slick talking of a classic 1980's Wall Street yuppie.

BWW Review: XANADU Hysterically Cruises from California to Lakeway TX
by Amy Tarver - February 20, 2019
Bringing the muses off mount Olympus to beachside California, XANADU is as wacky as its namesake would suggest. Following their mystical purpose, the greek muses find a struggling artist to inspire and guide on their journey to creation. Muse Clio (played by Mandy Foster) discovers bright-eyed Sonny (played by Daniel Drewes) and decides to transform herself into a skating Australian beauty name Kira, to help light his way. With the muse and artist in tow, they set out to create a roller-disco. With their vision blocked by the fantasy of rollerskates and sequins, fellow muses Melpomene (played by Megan Richards Wright) and Calliope (played by Amy Nichols) hatch a plan to thwart their sister Clio from falling in love with Sonny. This poses a serious problem for Clio, as her Father Zeus forbids muses to love or create art themselves. Navigating their attraction and the giant task of procuring and opening a roller disco, Kira and Sonny continue their plight challenging landlord Danny Maguire (played by Huck Huckaby) to grant them a space for their dancing dreams.
BWW Review: OUR TOWN at The City Theatre Austin
by Jesse Griffith - February 20, 2019
It's a bit embarrassing to admit that a life-long theatre junkie like me had never seen OUR TOWN until last Saturday night. I have read it and loved it of course; I am familiar with the plot, characters, etc, but had never actually experienced this American treasure and I am so glad and grateful I got to see this production. Austin Theatre lovers have a special affinity for The City Theatre I think because it's a 'neighborhood' theatre. Andy Berkovsky and company treat you like family and instead of dropping in for coffee, we drop in for some quality art time.
BWW Review: THE THREE MUSKETEERS at Mary Moody Northen Theatre
by Jesse Griffith - February 20, 2019
The Alexandre Dumas classic The Three Musketeers has been told, retold, produced and reimagined in countless ways in its 175-year history. This production is a marvelous retelling of the story from playwright Megan Monaghan Rivas with what I would term a gender-blend cast (versus gender-blind). It is a tight, witty and thoroughly entertaining revisit of this timeless tale.
BWW Review: THE FEUD hits the target at Dougherty Arts Center
by Amanda England - February 19, 2019
Audiences will be thoroughly entertained by this fast-paced and funny musical, which covers a lot of territory in just one hour.

LYSISTRATA, Aristophanes' Comedy on the Eternal Battle of the Sexes
by BWW News Desk - February 18, 2019
For a two-week special event, The City Theatre Company presents the comedic satire Lysistrata. With wars raging, the distressed women of Athens take matters into their own hands, refusing to make love until there is peace. This social spoof, written in 411 BCE., is as relevant to modern concerns - and humor - of today as it was in ancient Greece.
BWW Review: MOON OVER BUFFALO at The Wimberley Players
by Addison McKissack - February 18, 2019
George and Charlotte Hay want to make it big. Their theatre troupe is failing, their marriage is on the rocks, the troupe's ingenue is pregnant and their big break is coming at the most inopportune time. Leave it to Ken Ludwig's fast-paced farce, MOON OVER BUFFALO at The Wimberley Players to emphasize just how crazy life can get in a family of actors.
