BWW Reviews: Wimberley Players Brings Professionalism, Humor, and Heart to COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME
by Jeff Davis - April 25, 2014
I'm convinced that the city of Wimberley houses the Central Texas theater community's best kept secret: The Wimberley Players. The humble theater company in the small town of Wimberley is one of the best, brightest, and most professional theater companies in the area. Even Austinites who are vehemently opposed to gassing up the car and spending a little time and energy to drive south of the river would agree that Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is well worth the trip.
BWW Reviews: Austin Playhouse's ROARING is a Resounding Success

Austin Playhouse's world premiere proves to be funny and thought-provoking.
BWW Reviews: ROMEO & JULIET Is a Comedy?
by Jeff Davis - April 25, 2014
To Austin area High School English teachers, I sincerely apologize if any of your students see The Baron's Men's current production of Romeo and Juliet. If they do, they may enter your class with the false belief that Shakespeare's play about impulsive, horny, and eventually suicidal teens is meant to be a comedy. It's not. The words 'A Tragedy' sometimes even accompany the title. The only tragedies of this production are the over three hour running time, the direction that plays the majority of the story for laughs, and the fact that The Baron's Men, while claiming to have great reverence for the Bard, would do this to one of Shakespeare's greatest works.

Tired of seeing the same Broadway tours come through town every year? Broadway is back at the Long Center…and this season the key word is 'original.' Austin's Creative Home has announced its 2014-15 Broadway Season, and the lineup includes three spectacular productions that have never been staged before in Austin. BWW Reviews: CAT IN THE HAT Impresses Kids and Adults Alike
by Jeff Davis - April 25, 2014
There's a good reason why the work of Dr. Seuss still remains part of American pop culture. His wit, humor, and iconic style are timeless, and his stories engage kids of all ages. If you don't believe me, go to Zach Theatre and see their stage adaptation of The Cat in the Hat. While kids will love the silliness of the titular feline, adults will be astonished and thrilled by the cleverness of the stagecraft.
BWW Reviews: Austin Theatre Project's COMPANY a Thrilling Production of a Sondheim Classic
by Jeff Davis - April 25, 2014
To borrow from my favorite boozing broad, I'd like to propose a toast: To Austin Theatre Project. With their production of Company, ATP shows once again why they are a new theater company to watch. By tackling Stephen Sondheim's beloved show about the ups and downs of both marriage and bachelorhood, ATP once again showcases their ability to tell a story and entertain.
BWW's Jeff Davis to Make Directorial Debut With SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS, Runs 6/19-28
by BWW News Desk - April 24, 2014
Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks is a touching and human comedy about a formidable retired woman, Lily Harrison, who hires an acerbic dance instructor, Michael Minetti, to give her private dance lessons -one per week for six weeks- in her gulf-front condo in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. What begins as an antagonistic relationship blossoms into an intimate friendship as these two people from very different backgrounds reveal their secrets, fears, and joys while dancing the Swing, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, and Contemporary Dance. Michael and Lily learn to overcome their outward differences and discover an unlikely but profound connection. By the final lesson, Lily shares with Michael her most closely guarded secret and he shares with her his greatest gifts, his loyalty and compassion. A comedy with music and dance, the play also addresses the serious issues of ageism and intolerance.

BWW Reviews: LAST MEETING is a Meeting Worth Skipping
by Jeff Davis - April 17, 2014
I have no doubt that selecting a theatrical season must be an incredibly challenging task. Making a last minute change to your season must be even worse. Different Stages, one of Austin's most consistently impressive theater companies, was posed with such a problem this year when they were forced to forgo one of their initially announced production, Child's Play.
BWW Reviews: Few Spicy Performers Can't Save Mild IN THE HEIGHTS
by Jeff Davis - April 17, 2014
There's a great Hollywood myth about the film version of The Color Purple. The beloved classic about African-American women was directed by the very male and very white Steven Spielberg, but he allegedly almost quit the project days before shooting was to begin. According to legend, Steven called the film's producer, Quincy Jones, a few days before shooting to voice his doubts about the project. 'I don't think I should direct this,' Steven said. 'I'm a white Jewish guy from California. What do I know about African-American women from the South?' To this, Quincy replied, 'Steven, are you an alien? Because you directed E.T., and I think that was pretty good.' Spielberg stayed on as director, and the film was a huge success that earned 11 Oscar nominations.
