by Jeff Davis - April 15, 2014
It's tough to decide what I like more, a great production or a great new theater. Thankfully, I got both during my recent trip to Texas State San Marcos Department of Theatre and Dance. Their current production of Anything Goes is stunning, as is the new Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre.

It is hard not to like The Gospel at Colonus, the current Zach revival at the Topfer Theatre. The production is at once joyous and tragic; beautifully rich and amazingly stark - it will have you on your feet swaying to heartfelt, robust gospel music and it will also push you hard in your seat as you contemplate the tragic life of the main character(s).

Different Stages Presents THE LAST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA, Now Through 4/26
by BWW News Desk - April 13, 2014
Different Stages continues its 2013 - 2014 season with Preston Jones' comedy Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia. A fraternity of Bradleyville's 'good ole boys,' which meets in the now decrepit Cattleman's Hotel, the Knights of the White Magnolia has long since lost sight of its espoused concern with patriotism and racial purity and has become an excuse for a handful of cronies to share a game of dominoes and a spot of liquid refreshment. Having dwindled steadily in membership, the lodge has unaccountably found a new recruit from a neighboring town, and his appearance gives the remaining members a chance to resurrect their ancient 'mystic' initiation rite, an event which, for all its intentional seriousness, becomes one of the wildest, funniest scenes imaginable. However, in the end the inevitable disillusionment sets in sending the would-be applicant scurrying for home and leaving the others to contemplate the wreckage and loss of still another glory that once was.

BWW Reviews: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG a Triumphant Production of Seldom-Produced Sondheim
by Jeff Davis - April 06, 2014
Over the course of his fifty year career, Stephen Sondheim has written shows of a predominantly darker hue. He's tackled stories about showgirls who are past their prime, a barber turned serial killer, a giant who destroys a fairy tale kingdom, presidential assassins, and an entire country selling out to the western world. Still, his unassuming 1981 musical about the slow demise of a three-pronged friendship may be the saddest thing he's ever written. If that sounds like an indication that you should skip Merrily We Roll Along, keep in mind that no one does sad like Sondheim. In other words, roll along to St. Edwards University, see this show, and enjoy the emotional sucker punch.
BWW Reviews: Extraordinary Performances Save ORDINARY DAYS
by Jeff Davis - April 04, 2014
A word of caution to writers everywhere. Never use a word as bland as 'ordinary' in the title of your work. Its use will either be prophetic or grossly inaccurate. In the case of Ordinary Days, it's a bit of both. While Penfold Theatre's production of the new chamber musical features some of the greatest talent that the Austin theater community has to offer, the material itself isn't up to par. The show is extraordinary, but the material is not.

The New York Times says 'Edward Albee, the leading playwright of his generation, has been confounding, challenging, and stimulating theater audiences for almost half a century.'
