Showtunes! Theatre Company Announces 2006-2007 Season

Showtunes! Theatre Company has announced its 2nd full season of musicals in concert. Performances will take place at the Kirkland Performing Arts Center.

Showtunes! will open their season with It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman! (October 7th-8th 2006). The Man of Steel is also a song and dance man in this high flying 1966 comic book come to life. Superman and Lois Lane thwart a crazed mad scientist and a lecherous newspaper columnist, to the tantalizing tunes of Charles Strouse & Lee Adams (Bye, Bye Birdie, Applause) and a script by the men who later wrote the smash hit 1978 film version of Superman.

Superman will be followed by Dear World (January 20th-21st, 2007). Angela Lansbury took home a second Tony award in her second starring role in a musical by composer/ lyricist Jerry(Hello, Dolly!, La Cage Aux Folles, Mame) Herman and book writers Jerome Lawrence Robert E. Lee. This is the whimsical, charming tale of the Madwoman of Chaillot and her equally balmy cohorts, who scheme to save their beloved Paris, and the whole dear world from the big business baddies.

Rounding out Showtunes! 2006-2007 season will be Barnum (April 14th-15th 2007). Come follow the band (and the crowds) to the Tony award winning tale of that legendary master showman of the Big Top, P.T. Barnum. You'll experience the tale of his rise to the top of showbiz, played out against his bittersweet personal life, to the music of the one and only Cy (Sweet Charity, On the 20th Century) Coleman.

From the co-producing artistic directors Maggie Pehrson and David-Edward Hughes "Our 2006-2007 season is, always is about great musical scores, but we also wanted to do a show that would have a title that would be instantly recognizable even if the musical itself isn't, hence Superman. The bonus is that it is really a fun show, with upbeat songs. Dear World has some of Jerry Herman's most heartbreakingly beautiful ballads, and it is a show with great roles for the abundance of fantastic musical theatre actresses here. Barnum will be an exciting challenge to stage in bare bones, concert style, but it's another great Cy Coleman score and full of juicy roles for all.
