John Doyle's recent revival of Sweeney Todd will play a limited engagement this summer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, CA before hitting the road on national tour. The Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical is slated to run Aug 30-Oct 14th.

According to a casting call, scheduled for Jan 31st- Feb 2nd, the musical which features actors playing the entire score, will tour the US following the San Franscico dates. The national tour, playing October 22nd- July 2008, is being produced by Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel, Ambassador Theatre Group, Adam Kenwright and Tulchin/Barnter/Bagert.

This production of Sweeney Todd, directed by Tony Award-winner John Doyle with 10 talented actor/musicians, won the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and was awarded a Special Citation by the New York Drama Critics Circle.

Doyle is currently represented on Broadway with a revival of the Sondheim musical Company.

The recent revival, starring Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris, arrived on Broadway from a London engagement originally staged by the Watermill Theatre.  The Broadway production recouped its entire $3.5 million investment just 19 weeks after opening.

Considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces, Sweeney Todd - the tale of the revenge-seeking "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and his meat pie-baking assistant - originally premiered at Broadway's Uris Theatre on Feb. 6, 1979, with a cast led by Len Cariou (Sweeney) and Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Lovett), who both nabbed Tony Awards for their roles. Harold Prince directed the production, which was awarded the 1979 Tony for Best Musical.

Next month, filming of the Dreamworks' version of Sweeney Todd commences. Tim Burton's film will star Johnny Depp, Helena Bottom Carter, and Jim Broadbent.
