This February, discover the latest emerging talent from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama over an eleven day run at the Tristan Bates Theatre in the heart of Covent Garden.

Graduating actors from the BA (Hons) Acting Collaborative and Devised Theatre course have worked alongside BA (Hons) Theatre Practice students and industry professionals to create a dynamic piece of new, original new work.

In this premier performance run, This Is Not A Drill explores themes of the future, the rise of the digital age, climate change, space travel and galactic possibilities. Combining bold, innovative use of video, light and sound, a playful and physical approach to performance with rigorous contemporary questioning, the show pushes the boundaries for new work by young theatre makers.

Professional support includes direction by Jemima James (Assistant Director on Complicite's The Encounter) and set and costume design by Harry Whitham (Hookup by Outbox at Hackney Showroom).

About This Is Not A Drill

It's undeniable. The future is coming. Red lines on graphs and water levels are rising and smart blue screens are getting smarter by the second. The big cars with tinted windows are driving past tired people walking along the roadside. The supersize bite of progress doesn't taste quite the same as it did before.

This is not a drill takes us on a journey across Outer and Inner Space, cyber landscapes and the kitchen floor. The international ensemble of actors brings vividly to life the struggle to think about what's ahead when social conditioning has us checking our phones in the face of crisis. The result is darkly funny, highly theatrical, intelligent and surprising. Directed by Jemima James (Complicite, Theatre O). Devised by the company. Presented by The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

About BA (Hons) Acting Collaborative and Devised Theatre:

Central's Acting Collaborative and Devised Theatre course is innovative and rigorous, emphasising the creation of new theatre and embracing a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary methodology. Students graduate with the skills to work in classical and contemporary theatre, film, radio and television, and are accomplished makers of their own work.

The course is led by Catherine Alexander, associate director with Complicite, and is taught by a range of award-winning professional directors and teachers. From the outset, the course works closely with professional theatre companies and emergent or professionally active directors. Recently, students have had workshops and created performances with Complicite, Nancy Meckler, Filter Theatre, Declan Donnellan, Max Stafford-Clark, Robin Soans, Tanika Gupta, Douglas Rintoul/Transport Theatre, John Wright and Blind Summit.

This is Not a Drill, an original new theatre work created by the company over a five week period, encapsulates the ethos of the course: collaborative, experimental and interdisciplinary.
