Tapestry Dance Company presents the premiere of TIME

(Austin, TX) – Tapestry Dance Company, North America’s only repertory tap dance company presents the premiere of Acia Gray’s TIME – A Journey Toward Present Grace.

“It's been a few seasons since Tapestry Dance Company has tackled a premiere that deals with a topic other than an historical perspective or tribute to the incredible history and legacy of tap dance. With "The Souls of Our Feet"" and "April Fools" being two of those critically acclaimed and successful examples, returning to my love of contemporary and theatrical work has been a wonderful journey over the last few weeks. This ensemble creation shows a beautiful diversity to the company that is rarely seen in performance. I'm honored to have such a creative "team" in place to play with. I can't wait to witness the final product on opening night” –Acia Gray, Artistic Director

Working in a collaborative playground with the dancers of Tapestry, this new work "Time" presents a rhythm journey based on a concept and definition of "the manmade illusion of control we call time."

Where have we been, what are we doing, where are we going, and how do we get there? - are just some of the questions that have brought unique rhythmic responses not only from the pallet of director/choreographer Acia Gray but some of the best young tap dancers on the international stage today – the members of Tapestry Dance Company. Not only are these artists presenting new ensemble work within the entire evening but their own comedic as well as poignant choreography all responding to the challenge of the definition of time.

by BWW News Desk - Jan 26, 2015

'Kafka's Quest, a.k.a. Kafka/Samsa' is a quasi-realistic play by the late playwright Lu Hauser that imagines the family life of Gregor Samsa, the tragic victim of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis,' and his friendship with an historic Yiddish Theater actor and actress in Prague, prior to the events of the famed novella. Set in Prague in 1912, it portrays Gregor Samsa (the name Kafka personified himself with in the book) as torn between his father, who wants to keep him on the straight and narrow with a full Time job, and his friendship with artists of the Yiddish Theater, who want him to join and write for them. His father's bankruptcy forces Gregor to become the breadwinner of the family, which has been forced to take in two mysterious lodgers to make ends meet. The back and forth between the two poles of Gregor's life will culminate in 'The Metamorphosis.' Theater for the New City will present the play's world premiere February 26 to March 15, directed by Manfred Bormann. (more...)

When asked about working with Chita Rivera to shoot the image, photographer Frank Ockenfels told NYT: 'She's a grand dame. There are not a lot people left like her. She was so present and giving. There was no, "We're done." She said, "Is there more I can do?" SomeTimes with someone of her age, they are conscious of being overlit. But she was more about what makes sense for the photograph, which is tremendously helpful. It was amazing to see her work with other actors and how she moved gracefully and beautifully. She had to step up on a piece of steel and she got up and there were no complaints. She moves around like a 20-year-old.' (more...)
