Tapestry Dance Company presents the premiere of TIME

(Austin, TX) – Tapestry Dance Company, North America’s only repertory tap dance company presents the premiere of Acia Gray’s TIME – A Journey Toward Present Grace.

“It's been a few seasons since Tapestry Dance Company has tackled a premiere that deals with a topic other than an historical perspective or tribute to the incredible history and legacy of tap dance. With "The Souls of Our Feet"" and "April Fools" being two of those critically acclaimed and successful examples, returning to my love of contemporary and theatrical work has been a wonderful journey over the last few weeks. This ensemble creation shows a beautiful diversity to the company that is rarely seen in performance. I'm honored to have such a creative "team" in place to play with. I can't wait to witness the final product on opening night” –Acia Gray, Artistic Director

Working in a collaborative playground with the dancers of Tapestry, this new work "Time" presents a rhythm journey based on a concept and definition of "the manmade illusion of control we call time."

Where have we been, what are we doing, where are we going, and how do we get there? - are just some of the questions that have brought unique rhythmic responses not only from the pallet of director/choreographer Acia Gray but some of the best young tap dancers on the international stage today – the members of Tapestry Dance Company. Not only are these artists presenting new ensemble work within the entire evening but their own comedic as well as poignant choreography all responding to the challenge of the definition of time.

BWW Review: A 'Midsummer' to End All SummersBWW Review: A 'Midsummer' to End All Summers
by Kristen Morale - Aug 30, 2015

Watching Shakespeare's play come to life on the sandy shores of Chatham, Massachusetts is a rather interest thing to behold. Hippolyta lounges on a beach chair near the ocean while the mischievous Puck jovially dances onto the stage wearing an Anglers jersey. Cape Cod is to be found everywhere, yet Monomoy has still managed to keep the Shakespearean spirit alive and well in its production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The characters have remained the same: Theseus and Hippolyta still plan on being wed, Helena entreats after the love and affection of the unwilling Demetrius, who instead views the fair Hermia as his darling one - a love interest shared with the doting Lysander, whom Hermia finds dear. The fairy King and Queen, in addition to those that serve them, still wreak havoc on the lives of each other as well as on the unsuspecting humans below, stealing from them their gift of free will and forcing them to see what they would not have otherwise seen. A group of men anticipating their performance before Theseus and his new bride at their wedding run into trouble when their lead is given an animal's head. Confusion and inexplicable events still run rampant, and this story remains as entertaining and riveting as ever - this is without a doubt true. (more...)

by Jay Irwin - Aug 30, 2015

If you're a company thinking of doing the rock musical of "Spring Awakening" you need to be ready for it, not only as it's such a difficult show but since it was just done in the area a few years ago and to such acclaim. And while I applaud fledgling company Chandelier Production's courage in taking on such a tough show not to mention their model of using their proceeds to support local LGBTQ charities such as Peace from the Streets by Kids from the Streets, their current production shows that they are not mature enough of a company to handle this demanding show as there were so many issues vocally, theatrically and technically. by Ellen Burns - Aug 29, 2015

There are many gifted vocalists in this world (more about that later) and many gifted vocalists with charming personalities, but the sheer volume of gift and charm packed into the diminutive Kristin Chenoweth is a wonder to behold. She can sing, my word, can she sing, but when she is on stage, as last night at Wolf Trap, what particularly strikes you is her openness, sincerity and ease with herself and her audience. Chenoweth is a generous performer, warmly sharing the stage with local DC artists and musicians, and her music director, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, a talented vocalist in her own right. (more...)

BWW Review: Mark Nadler Launches New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits Series at Metropolitan Room In Tempestuous, Hilarious, Whip-Smart StyleBWW Review: Mark Nadler Launches New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits Series at Metropolitan Room In Tempestuous, Hilarious, Whip-Smart Style
by Alix Cohen - Aug 29, 2015

Back in January, BroadwayWorld's lead cabaret reviewer Stephen Hanks announced he was giving up critiquing shows to start his own company, Cabaret Life Productions, through which he would publicize, promote, and help book cabaret performers, and also produce cabaret shows. Hanks' first major production out of the box is a monthly series at the Metropolitan Room called New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits, that features talented artists recreating award-winning or highly-praised shows we wish we'd seen--a really good idea. Hanks' series launched Wednesday night with Mark Nadler's award-winning 2003 show Tschaikowsky (And Other Russians). The Metropolitan Room was filled to the gills and abuzz with anticipation, as most of the audience was only familiar with the show's second-hand praise and/or the CD version of Nadler's performance.
