Tapestry Dance Company presents the premiere of TIME

(Austin, TX) – Tapestry Dance Company, North America’s only repertory tap dance company presents the premiere of Acia Gray’s TIME – A Journey Toward Present Grace.

“It's been a few seasons since Tapestry Dance Company has tackled a premiere that deals with a topic other than an historical perspective or tribute to the incredible history and legacy of tap dance. With "The Souls of Our Feet"" and "April Fools" being two of those critically acclaimed and successful examples, returning to my love of contemporary and theatrical work has been a wonderful journey over the last few weeks. This ensemble creation shows a beautiful diversity to the company that is rarely seen in performance. I'm honored to have such a creative "team" in place to play with. I can't wait to witness the final product on opening night” –Acia Gray, Artistic Director

Working in a collaborative playground with the dancers of Tapestry, this new work "Time" presents a rhythm journey based on a concept and definition of "the manmade illusion of control we call time."

Where have we been, what are we doing, where are we going, and how do we get there? - are just some of the questions that have brought unique rhythmic responses not only from the pallet of director/choreographer Acia Gray but some of the best young tap dancers on the international stage today – the members of Tapestry Dance Company. Not only are these artists presenting new ensemble work within the entire evening but their own comedic as well as poignant choreography all responding to the challenge of the definition of time.

Long Center Resident Company, Tapestry is a professional, non-profit dance organization founded in 1989 for the purpose of developing a foundation in multi-form dance performance and education and is home to the only repertory tap dance company in North America. Its expansive south Austin, TX facility is home to seven resident artists, an annual tap dance festival, educational outreach programs, and a pre-professional and adult training facility sharing the unique training syllabus of founders Acia Gray and Deirdre Strand.

BWW Review: Gentlemen Prefer Booty in Kirsten Childs' BELLA: AN AMERICAN TALL TALE
by Michael Dale - Jun 24, 2017

The recent Signature Theatre revival of Suzan Lori-Parks' VENUS, based on the true story of Saartjie Baartman, depicted a 19th Century African woman who was subjected to exploitation because of white people's fascination with her prominent posterior.  But the mood is considerably lighter over at Playwrights Horizons these days, where the title character of Kirsten Childs' joyfully old-fashioned, but sneakily subversive new musical, BELLA: AN AMERICAN TALL TALE, is a 19th Century African-American woman who celebrates the attention her queenly derriere receives and uses it as a source of empowerment. BWW Interview: Stephen Mark Lukas: Chemistry?...Yeah, Chemistry!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jun 24, 2017

'There's this line in the show that I think is key to understanding Sky and Sarah's romance. 'Chemistry?' she asks, and he says, 'Yeah, chemistry.' The message is that when that connection between two people happens, it doesn't really matter what you've predicted for yourself. What's real is the chemistry, not the intellectual idea. Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown each have qualities the other is lacking, and together they fill in the gaps.' The speaker is the charismatic young actor, Stephen Mark Lukas, who will be making his Maine State Music Theatre debut in his first ever performances as the suave gambler Sky Masterson in Frank Loesser Guys and Dolls, which runs at the Pickard Theater from June 28-July 15. VIDEO: Marina Kamen's 'Musical Health Talk!' Broadcast brings Vocals, Violin and 'YOGA' Together with Master Yoga Trainers Angela Rauscher & Justin Randolph
by Marina Kamen - Jun 23, 2017

While walking down 1st ave. In Manhattan NYC, I was introduced to a place called 'House of Jai Yoga” by fellow dancer Wendy Goldhill whom I had know since 1979 during my Time as a young dancer, singer & performer here in NYC. I was reluctant but figured I would join her and bore myself with a bit of much needed stretching. To my surprise, I found myself enveloped by a delicious surrounding and blend of music, fragrance, comfort and performance. The 2 Master Yoga Trainers I experienced were Justin Randolph, a gentle yet confident young man with a background in voice & theatre and then to Angela Rauscher who took me to a place that brought me to tears. The combination of music, texture and personal journey of their own made my mind connect truly to my body. Mind, body & spirit is so loosely used in yoga and very few actually display it. Well, after all, Talent is key in teaching and getting through to anyone and both of these Master Yoga Trainers have just that! Talent! (more...)
