The Gulf of Maine is changing. Its temperatures are rising. New species are arriving. Even the color of the water is changing. Few know this as well as Dr. Barney Balch, a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory, East Boothbay, Maine. For the last 18 years, Dr. Balch has crossed the Gulf countless times, gathering and analyzing samples from his mobile laboratory that he drives aboard the Portland to Nova Scotia ferry. By combining his measurements with data gathered from undersea robots and satellites, Dr. Balch investigates how the Gulf of Maine works and how long-term changes in climate affect the vital organisms at bottom of the marine food web, microorganisms on which all life in the sea ultimately depends. Riverdance- the Anniversary Tour returns to the USA from January to June 2017. J.L. Williams rejoins the ongoing 20th Anniversary tour and will be featured for the first time as the "Baritone Soloist" who sings "Freedom/Heal Their Hearts" as well as reprising his role as one of two African American tap dancers with Tyler Knowlin in the showstopping number "Trading Taps". Williams made his Riverdance debut back in the fall of 2015 in Canada. He also played the northwest of America and a limited engagement in Dublin this past summer. (more...)

BWW Review: Enjoyable, Wry MEN ON BOATS Marks American Theater Company Artistic Director Will Davis's Directorial Debut

It seems rather poetic that newly appointed Artistic Director Will Davis's first production at American Theater Company, MEN ON BOATS, focuses rather literally on charting new frontiers. Jaclyn Backhaus's witty, entertaining play (which Davis previously helmed with a different ensemble off-Broadway) offers a fictionalized account of Major John Wesley Powell's expedition along the Colorado and Green Rivers towards the then-unknown Grand Canyon. The titular men on boats comprise a crew of ten split among four vessels-and all are played by women or gender non-conforming performers. (more...)
