BWW Preview: Do You Want to Live FOREVER?
by Meg Wood - Sep 16, 2014

Greetings! I am thrilled to join you here at BWW to recap the new series “Forever.” The premise of the show is that Dr. Henry Morgan, an N.Y.P.D. coroner, has a small secret: He's about 200 years old and cannot die. Shows about immortality have always intrigued me, mostly because they have rarely been very successful. That's odd. Everyone has a fantasy of immortality, at least at times one is not rebalancing one's retirement account. It seems immortality shows should exercise a lure to viewers. That does not appear to be the case. (more...)

New Conservatory Theatre Center to Stage Shakespeare's 'R&J'
by BWW News Desk - Sep 12, 2014

Twelve years ago it stole the hearts of audiences in San Francisco, and now New Conservatory Theatre Center reimagines Shakespeare's R&J by Joe Calarco, in a powerful, all-new production directed by NCTC's first Artistic Associate Ben Randle. Shakespeare comes alive when four Catholic school teens, break the rules and secretly reenact Romeo and Juliet - the timeless story of dangerous forbidden love. Randle raises the stakes on this "electrifying" (Entertainment Weekly) and "vibrant, hot-blooded adaptation" (The New York Times), as it returns to our stage now set in a Jesuit school in Cairo, Egypt, where revealing who you are can still be a crime. Dennis Frahmann Releases THE FINNISH GIRL About a Multi-Generational Finnish American Family
by BWW News Desk - Aug 26, 2014

A multi-generational story about a Finnish American family in Wisconsin and how their American dream threatens to become a nightmare, Publishers Weekly calls the novel 'Melancholic, brooding, and cut-to-the-bone incisive, this is a tale to remember.' 'The Finnish Girl' is about how secrets kill. Not just those you choose to keep from others, or even those that others guard from you. There remains those secrets that you so desperately hide from yourself. They all catch up with Lempi Makinen Lahti. When Lempi's teenage son Danny discovers her suicide, he seeks to solve The Mysteries that defined her life and death. A pack of letters and clippings hidden in an old family trunk may be the only keys to understanding both his mother's past and his own future. 'The Finnish Girl' is a richly told tapestry of interwoven characters-the family patriarch who emigrates from Finland to the United States to create his own future, a son who turns his back on his home as part of an ill-fated mission to Russia during the Depression, the elderly mother who faces deportation in an America driven by fear during the Red Scare, and the young Finnish girl who cares too much about the injustices she sees. Decisions in one generation propel another on unexpected paths, until one family's hopes for the American dream threaten to become its nightmare. 'The Finnish Girl,' a semi-finalist in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition, is available in both print and ebook format. BWW Reviews: BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK Reveals A Stark Reality
by Herbert Paine - Aug 25, 2014

In By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, acclaimed dramatist Lynn Nottage (winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Ruined), has illuminated the irony and hurtful absurdity of the Black struggle in Depression-era Hollywood to break the chains of racial stereotyping and to land good roles with good lines. iTheatre Collaborative, a gem of a company in the heart of Phoenix boldly stages this play under the direction of Charles St. Clair and with a cast that artfully commands the stage. Nicole Belit is exquisite, endowing Vera with elegance, grace, and the self-assurance that was required to leap from handmaiden to film star. (more...)
