Wynette's 'Stand by Your Man' was one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman in the history of country music. by Jeff Davis - Mar 5, 2015

Ask any musical theater junkie what's the best musical of all time, and any worth their spit will answer with one word: Gypsy. The iconic show is highly regarded to this day with good reason. The score's infectious, the sets and costumes eye-catching, and the characters, particularly that of Mama Rose, are on par with those found in plays by Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams. Gypsy isn't just musical theater. It's a great American Drama, and all that the show can and should be comes to vivid life in The Playhouse's current production. (more...)

BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining EveningBWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining Evening
by Frank Benge - Mar 27, 2015

The 60's were an exciting time for music in America, due in no small part to the proliferation of groups with amazing vocal harmonies like The Mamas & Papas, The Beach Boys, Spanky & Our Gang and The Four Seasons. JERSEY BOYS is a jukebox musical based on the song catalog of The Four Seasons; however, unlike most jukebox musicals, JERSEY BOYS features an intelligent script where the songs flow with the story instead of being forced into a storyline. I suspect the participation of Rick Elice, who was also one of the scriptwriters for the charming and witty PETER AND THE STARCATCHER had more than a little to do with the intelligence and theatrical storytelling skill on display here. by BWW News Desk - Mar 18, 2015

What. A. Crazy. Month! Inclined is soaring on adrenaline and joy right now...we had such an incredible Spring Season! Between reaching our Indiegogo Campaign goal, our momentous NYC show presented by The Series, our travels up to Boston, and our SOLD-OUT shows at The Dance Complex in Cambridge, we could not be more happy, grateful, and excited about what we have achieved. Inclined connected with so many amazing artists, dancers, producers, photographers, and videographers both in NYC and in Boston, and we made a wonderful new friend in our Boston split-bill partner Intimations Dance. We have had a truly amazing time. Inclined reached some major milestones this spring, but we could not have done it without a lot of help. We are so indebted to our amazing donors and audiences, and to The Series and The Dance Complex for wanting to present and sponsor our work. Thank you everyone for the incredible support, love, and enthusiasm that has been sent our way. We are so thrilled by our first major Spring Performance Season, and as a Director, I have never been more proud of my incredibly talented dancers. These ladies are nothing short of amazing. So, what's next for Inclined!? We are taking a much deserved breather, but we have some exciting things coming up for this summer and into the fall...so stay tuned. We're on a roll. Thank you again everyone for your generous support this spring. (more...)

Heartbeat Opera Presents the ONE ACT FESTIVAL, 3/18-22Heartbeat Opera Presents the ONE ACT FESTIVAL, 3/18-22
by BWW News Desk - Mar 11, 2015

Heartbeat Opera is a new company intent upon re-imagining opera in intimate spaces for a new generation. Employing a minimalism that allows the emotional integrity of the music to shine through, the company's work focuses on the body of the singer and the visceral power of the music. Co-Artistic Directors Louisa Proske and Ethan Heard, who trained together in the Directing program at the Yale School of Drama, are committed to nurturing the actor in every singer they work with. The company creates productions of classics and new pieces that are daring and visceral—productions that manifest the emotional grandeur and theatrical power of opera with minimal means. Heartbeat's one-act festival presentation of György Kurtág's Kafka-Fragments, directed by Heard, and the New York premiere of Jacques Offenbach's Daphnis & Chloé, in a new English translation directed by Proske, marks this young company's debut. Heartbeat Opera's resident music ensemble Cantata Profana, described by The New York Times as “a stylish early music ensemble,” will provide musical accompaniment. (more...)

by Heidi Scheuermann - Apr 1, 2015

There have been a few times in my life where I attended an event, be it a theatre production or a concert, and I woke up the next morning still reeling from the excitement with a cheesy smile plastered across my face. The first time I remember that happening was when my dad took me and my younger sister to see Hanson (yes, the Mmmbop guys) on their Middle of Nowhere Tour. I also remember feeling like that after I saw NEWSIES for the first time on Broadway. Experiencing THE MIDTOWN MEN at the Mahalia Jackson Theater was another one of those events. Not only are these guys some of the sweetest, most genuine humans I've ever met - we're talking funfetti cupcake status, here - they have a passion for entertaining that is unmatched. (more...)
