BWW Reviews: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD in Bridgeport - Do the Right Thing
by Sherry Shameer Cohen - Mar 31, 2014

Few popular novels have been as powerful about a subject as Harper Lee's 1960 novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. As a film with an A-list star and as a play that is produced from time to time (but not nearly as often as it should be, in this critic's opinion), it's always a solid hit. Thankfully, the creative team at the Bridgeport Theatre Company did not depend on this. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Public Theatre Explores the Absurd Side of Dysfunction
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Feb 2, 2014

Lewiston's Public Theatre has mounted a stylish, wistful, zany production of Kim Rosenstock's Tigers Be Still, a bittersweet comedy that looks at the absurd side of dysfunction. The play, which had its premiere at New York's Roundabout Theatre, tells the intertwined stories of two families who have been immobilized by loss and their struggle to emerge from depression and move forward with their lives. Narrated by the daughter Sherry, whose recently acquired job as an art therapist gives her the impetus to shake her gloom, the play draws an ironic contrast between Sherry's newfound optimism and the darker realities of the other characters. Ever lurking in the background is the metaphorical - and actual - threat of a tiger escaped from the zoo - the nameless fear that paralyzes action until at last confronted toward the end of the play. BWW Reviews: DREAMGIRLS Dazzles in Bridgeport
by Sherry Shameer Cohen - Jan 27, 2014

Bridgeport Theatre Company, soon to celebrate four years since it was founded, is presenting Dreamgirls, the big, bold, groundbreaking musical. The Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen show premiered in 1981 and is loosely based on Diana Ross and The Supremes and other singers who helped make Motown a huge crossover success. More than 30 years later, it is still a terrific show, but a little cutting would make it easier for today's audiences to digest. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Littlest Mermaid in Bridgeport
by Sherry Shameer Cohen - Jan 20, 2014

There are supposed to be laws against using TNT in fishing, but The Littlest Mermaid, which is now playing at the Downtown Cabaret Children's Theatre is dynamic. The story is a take-off of The Little Mermaid, with the theme of love and the wit of interjecting reality TV and social networking into the plot. (more...)
