Music Mountain, America's oldest continuing summer chamber music festival, continues its 87th Anniversary Season with the acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet on Sunday, June 12th (3PM) performing a program of Bach, Ravel, and Beethoven. This weekend also marks the start of the popular Saturday Evening Twilight Series (6:30pm). Connecticut's favorite jazz band, The Galvanized Jazz Band opens the series! The summer will feature 15 weekends of incredible music including returning favorite chamber ensembles and musicians, first-time guests, the ever-popular Saturday Evening Twilight Series, featuring an array of Jazz ensembles and musicians, including the incredibly talented artists of the Catskill Jazz Factory, and the second season of the new Music Mountain Master Classes for Young Artists plus so much more! NEC's Cutting Edge Playhouse 2016 Emerging Playwrights Competition Begins This June

Beginning in June 2016, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. (NEC) will deepen its commitment to discovery, development and presentation of superior theatre with four consecutive weekends of exciting and innovative productions showcasing up-and-coming Black playwrights. The Emerging Playwrights Competition is NEC's 2016 Pilot Project, marking NEC's return to the solid and impressive development and training format that established the company as an American theatre icon for over three decades. Historic Regent Theatre Announces Centennial Gala

In 1916, Woodrow Wilson was President and Europe was in the thick of World War I.  The State of Montana elected the first woman representative in Congress and the U.S. National Park Service was created by an act of Congress.  Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and Mae Marsh were some of the entertainment stars of the day, appearing on marquees across the country.  In the midst of the silent film era, the Regent Theatre first opened its doors on April 24, 1916. A state of the art theater at the time, it was said "There is no city or town that can boast of a more beautiful motion picture theatre."  (more...)

The life, work and legacy of beloved and prolific Bay Area composer, pianist, conductor and educator Herbert Bielawa (1930-2015) will be celebrated in a concert of his music Friday, April 29, at 8 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Road, Kensington. Among other accomplishments, Bielawa served on the music faculty of San Francisco State University for 25 years, where he founded the contemporary music ensemble Pro Musica Nova, created electronic and computer music studios, instigated ground-breaking programs and curricula and was an indefatigable champion of new music. Admission to the concert –which spans 50 years of Bielawa's work--is free of charge and the public is invited to celebrate this remarkable artist, whose contributions to the Bay Area and American musical scenes have been substantial.  (more...)

The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE announces the two original book musicals which have been selected for this year's two-week summer lab:  Blessing, music and lyrics by Andrew R. Butler and book by Andrew Farmer, directed by Kent Nicholson; and The White City, music by Avi Amon and book and lyrics by Julia Gytri, directed by Mark Brokaw. The 2016 Institute, which runs June 12-25 at Yale School of Drama, will culminate with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, on June 24 and 25.
