In the 2014-15 season, the NYC theatre industry hit a record high in the 9 years AAPAC has data collected. For the first time, 30% of all available roles went to actors of color, a jump from 24% the previous year. After three years in a row of exceeding the Nine-year average of 23%, it seems safe to say that there is a definite upward trend in the casting of actors of color. (more...)

The 2016 season of Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) culminated during three days in April at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). On April 27th, the Final Round of this celebrated international competition proved to be a heartening display of youthful promise. Then on April 28th and 29th, the "Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow" Gala featured the 2016 YAGP finalists along with a roster of top-flight professionals. Sterling Masters hails from Charlotte, NC and is currently appearing in Wicked on Broadway. Long before she made her Broadway debut in the show she grew up dancing in her mom's dance studio. She competed in dance competitions and still holds the record for being the first and only dancer to hold all four titles for Carolina Dance Masters. After a brief stint at Florida State, Sterling was cast in the national tour of Fosse and never looked back. She went on to perform (and dance captain) national tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Wicked, to name a few. (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—April 25, 2016—In its triumphant season finale, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO) gears up to embark on an international tour of China in June by performing a program that ranges from 19th-century masterpieces to a brand new work by one of today's leading composers. Energized from a season of artistic achievement, the orchestra opens the concert with “Lighter Than Air,” a newly commissioned work by the Symphony's composer-in-residence, Narong Prangcharoen, and ends with Tchaikovsky's dramatic Symphony No. 4. In-between, the program spotlights the winner of this season's concerto competition, Erica Huang, who performs Dvorák's moving Cello Concerto. Comprised of Southern California's most talented young symphonic musicians, grades 9-12, PSYO is led by the Symphony's Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia, who says: “You will not see many high school youth orchestras perform works of this caliber at such a high level.” (more...)
