Curated by Juan Michael Porter II, THE SERIES 2017 presents a versatile range of artistically provocative choreographers in contrasting programs of dance.  At each performance, one or two of the 12 guest companies will share the program with Michael Mao Dance in a set of works that run the gamut from social dance to jazz to contemporary ballet to abstract pieces marked by their German Expressionistic values. The common thread running through each company featured in THE SERIES  is the use of spectacular physical virtuosity to communicate fantastic ideas, June 6-11 at the Hudson Guild Theatre, 441 West 26th Street. Cultural Accessibility Awards Announced 6/22

On Thursday, June 22nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Cultural Access Network Project (CAN), a program of New Jersey Theatre Alliance and New Jersey State Council on the Arts, will host the ninth annual Excellence in Cultural Access Awards at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Attended by leaders in the state's arts and cultural community, the event will feature a keynote address by Valerie Fletcher, executive director of the Institute of Human Centered Design, educational roundtables, pop-up galleries with artwork by artists with disabilities, entertainment by Premiere Stages of Kean University, and a reception. Hoebee-Producing Artistic Director, Todd Schmidt-Managing Director) is thrilled to announce a special performance on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 8:00pm featuring the 2017 Paper Mill Playhouse Broadway Show Choir in their fully-staged concert event 'Paper Mill Sings' at the Hamilton Stage, 360 Hamiton Street in Rahway, NJ. This song and dance extravaganza will feature production numbers from popular Broadway shows including Newsies, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, The Wiz, A Bronx Tale, Disney's High School Musical, Annie, Sister Act, and more. The program will also feature pop favorites from Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, ABBA and Pentatonix. BRIC Partners with Dekalb Market Hall on Large Scale Mural Project

BRIC has partneredwith DeKalb Market Hall (445 Albee Square West, Brooklyn), the borough's largest market hall and culinary center, to install large-scale murals by Brooklyn-based visual artists. Columbian artist Tatiana Arocha, who is best known for placing hundreds of bird cut-outs throughout the borough as a public art commentary on climate change; Nigerian-born Olalekan Jeyifous, whose 50-foot "Crown Ether" sculpture was featured at this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival; and Cern, whose Fort Greene "Comandante Biggie" mural paid controversial homage to the late rapper Biggie Smalls, have each created a mural that will remain on view indefinitely at DeKalb Market Hall. Nimbus Dance Works' Announce New Location for 2017-18 Season

Facing an August 31st deadline to identify a new home, Nimbus Dance Works announces that the organization, one of Jersey City's largest professional arts non-profits, and a leading dance organization statewide, will relocate to 165 Newark Avenue for the 2017-18 season, adjacent to the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. With two dance studios, office and storage space, Nimbus' new location will house the professional company and Nimbus2 (second company), the School of Nimbus Dance Works, the NimbusPresents performance series, and company offices from which Nimbus administers dance education programs throughout the Jersey City school system. Nimbus has announced a campaign to raise funds and for in-kind items to support the move to the new location. (more...)

Premiere Stages at Kean University Announces 2017 Season

For the first time in its 13-year history, Premiere Stages will provide expanded development to five new works in one season, including the New Jersey Premiere of Skeleton Crew, the third play in Dominique Morisseau's critically acclaimed Detroit cycle, and the first professional production of Chris Cragin-Day's heartwarming play, Foster Mom, winner of the 2017 Premiere Stages Play Festival. This season will also feature free developmental workshops of Patricia Cotter's 1980 (Or Why I'm Voting For John Anderson), runner-up for the 2017 Play Festival, and two exciting new play commissions, Nicole Pandolfo's Brick City, developed in cooperation with NJPAC and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, and Martin Casella's Black Tom Island, recipient of the 2017/2018 Liberty Live Commission in partnership with Liberty Hall Museum. SMU's National Center for Arts Research (NCAR) today released its third annual Arts Vibrancy Index, which ranks more than 900 communities across the country, examining the level of supply, demand, and government support for the arts in each city.
