. It premiered in the 1983-1984 season at the Royal National Theatre in London. That same year, it made its American debut at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre before moving to Broadway’s Golden Theatre where it ran for a total of 378 performances.

The stakes are high at a fly by night Chicago real estate office: 1st prize- a new Cadillac, 2nd prize- a set of steak knives, 3rd prize- you’re fired! GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS slices to the core of the American dream and exposes the depths people will go to stay on top of the game. Mamet himself worked in a real estate office in Chicago in 1969 setting up appointments for salesmen, and the play is influenced by the cutthroat politics he encountered.

by Roy Berko - Aug 8, 2016

David Mamet, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Glengarry Glen Ross, a play which is now on stage at Blank Canvas, is noted for his unique style of writing dialogue. Dubbed 'Mamet speak,' his vocal tone centers on precisely crafted street-smart narrative style. His characters talk 'real.' They sound like the way people from the geographical area and societal level from which they come would really speak. Like a runaway train, this dark comedy about two brothers and their mutual resentment takes audiences on a thrill ride into the dark side of the human psyche, with laughs and unexpected moments of revelation along the way.  In its world premiere, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that True West is "clear, funny, naturalistic. It's also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic.  If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one aspect of Shepard's winning genius-the ability to make you think your watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another."
