BWW Review: The Troubies and Getty Villa Throw a HAUNTED HOUSE PARTY
by Ellen Dostal - Sep 9, 2016

Troubadour Theatre Company's classless clowns of classical comedy go rogue in their latest adaptation at the Getty Villa. Taking generous liberties with the source material (Plautus's Mostellaria) they reinvent the over-2000-year-old play as HAUNTED HOUSE PARTY, A Roman Comedy in their own unique style. Yes, it's definitely 'a Comedy Tonight.'  (more...)

BWW Review: Cabaret Celebrates Stephen Sondheim in Night Two of the Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Convention (10/19)
by Ashley Steves - Oct 21, 2016

Hold your hats and hallelujah. After an electrifying opening night, the Mabel Mercer Foundation's 27th Annual Cabaret Convention continued Wednesday night in a packed Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Hosted by Jeff Harnar and Andrea Marcovicci, the cabaret community gathered to salute the music of Stephen Sondheim, the EGOT-winning composer/lyricist whose oeuvre has been simultaneously catapulting and tripping up artists for decades. Despite 30 performances on the evening, you'd be hard-pressed to find a weak spot in Wednesday night's lineup, hosting what is arguably the best rotation of the four nights, featuring cabaret giants, up-and-comers, expert arrangers (plus the talents of Jered Egan on bass and Dan Gross on drums), and Sondheim role originators. BWW Opera Review: THE GREAT COMET Walks the Broadway-Opera Tightrope Brilliantly
by Richard Sasanow - Feb 7, 2017

During the opening sequence of NATASHA, PIERRE AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812--the extravagant, whirlwind of a show now playing at Broadway's Imperial (how fitting) Theatre--I couldn't help thinking how the Met could learn a thing or two from a show like this. No, I don't mean encouraging the audience to have a glass or two of vodka too many to drink. Rather, it's how it uses an immersive setting, dazzlingly created by scenic designer Mimi Lien, to draw the audience in closer. (more...)

BWW Review: Juilliard Opera's AGRIPPINA Shows How to Handel Silliness and Politics
by Richard Sasanow - Feb 22, 2017

A funny thing happened on the way to Emperor Claudius' death scene: He didn't die.
