UCI Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art (Langson IMCA) will present a new exhibition featuring the work of influential artists who were part of a creative community active in the early 1900s along the banks of the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles County, California. Bohemian of the Arroyo Seco: Idah Meacham Strobridge is the first exhibition exploring the impact this pioneering gallerist and writer had on the development of Los Angeles culture during this period.

Back in 2011 playwright Tanika Gupta staged her adaptation of Great Expectations. 12 years later she has re-worked the script, shifted the time frame and collaborated with the Artistic Director of Tamasha Pooja Ghai. Pooja played Mrs Gargery in the original, and who is now directing this new version for the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

Truman and a Kansas City friend may well have had an outsized influence on the success of the new tiny country.   That man was Eddie Jacobson, Truman’s close friend since 1905. What did our critic think of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL at Palm Canyon Theatre? Palm Canyon Theatre has taken some risks this season by offering a season of lesser-known shows, but their decision seems to be paying off. I know that my first-ever viewing of Titanic will last with me a long time, and their current production, The Scarlet Pimpernel, stacks up very close. It is definitely worth seeing - and especially hearing. The voices of the three leads would be comfortable in any concert hall in the world, and hearing them in PCT's relatively small auditorium is a rare treat.

The San Diego Symphony’s Music Director and Conductor Rafael Payare took up the notoriously difficult French horn at the age of 13. During an hour-long Zoom interview while he was in Montreal, I asked how he had managed to become a soloist less than six months later! “I have to admit it was a little bit fast,” he said. Not the haughty egotistical answer I might have gotten from film conductor-stereotypes. His local youth orchestra, a part of Venezuela’s extensive El Sistema program, needed horns, so he joined a few weeks after first picking one up. “For a couple of classes, I could only play one scale, but somehow something clicked, and I just started playing more.” Less than half a year later he passed an audition for the national youth orchestra, and later became Principal Horn with the prestigious Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra, the one that first brought Gustavo Dudamel to the attention of the conducting world.

 The Naumburg Orchestral Concerts announced the lineup for their 117th season today - The Knights, Handel and Haydn Society, A Far Cry, The Knights return with violinist Lara St. John and East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) closes out the 2022 season. All concerts will take place at 7:30 PM at the Naumburg Bandshell (Concert Ground, 72nd St, mid-park, New York, NY 10065). After two years of closures, extensions and a shortened season program, The Citadel is announcing a season complete with six Mainstage productions, three productions in the Highwire Series, two seasonal shows, and a special presentation.

Ringing in a hopeful 2022, Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, will kick off a full year of live performance and art.
