ArtsBridge Foundation, the arts education outreach arm of the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, today announced the nominees for the 8th Annual Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards - Shuler Hensley Awards in a live streaming broadcast on GPB.org. Tony Award-winner and Marietta-native Shuler Hensley joined GPB Sports Anchor Jackie Brittan to announce the nominations. 28 public and private schools from throughout the state were nominated in 17 categories. The awards, which showcase the next generation of Georgia's musical theatre talent, will be presented at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on April 21. Children's Theatre Company (CTC) will end its 50th Anniversary Season with the much anticipated world premiere of the musical based on the blockbuster, best-selling Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The famous book series by Jeff Kinney has been sold worldwide, has been brought to the silver screen through three films, and for the first time ever, is being developed into a new musical by CTC in conjunction with Fox Stage Productions and Kevin McCollum (producer of Rent, In the Heights, Avenue Q, and Something Rotten!). As expected, the 40th anniversary Olivier Awards showered trophies on the sensational Gypsy. Imelda Staunton and Lara Pulver's performances and Mark Henderson's lighting were recognised, and the production took Best Musical Revival. But there were surprises elsewhere, with starry shows like Benedict Cumberbatch's Hamlet going home empty-handed, Nicole Kidman losing out in the Best Actress race, and an underdog win for Pat Kinevane and Fishamble's Silent at Soho Theatre - all welcome given concerns that changes to the Oliviers voting process might favour long-running West End shows and/or A-listers Here are some of the night's major hits and misses.
