BWW Review: A Clevelander's View of the Stratford Theater Festival - A Season of Being Pushed to the Edge

The Stratford Festival of Canada, whose present artistic director is Atoni Cimolino, started on July 13, 1953, when Sir Alec Guiness walked onto a stage located in a large tent and spoke the first lines of what has become the internationally-recognized celebration of theatre. Now housed in five theatres, offering plays and other entertainment from late April to November, Stratford is the largest repertoire theatre in North America. The offerings are not only the writings of Shakespeare, but a variety of classical and contemporary works, including musicals. (more...)

After last summer's critical success with a promenade adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Iris Theatre are returning to the gardens and grounds of St Paul's Church, Covent Garden for a sixth year of family-friendly theatre, and its sequel, Alice through the Looking Glass. Alice through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll in a new adaptation by Daniel Winder and Candida Caldcott, will be presented from today, 30 July - Saturday 30 August. Genius is not a term to throw around lightly. Genius suggests distinctiveness and even superiority. Geniuses are people that are seldom matched in their field. It's a level that most of us strive to reach but never achieve. Yet for director Dave Steakley, it's a well-deserved moniker. With his current production of Tommy, now playing at the Zach Theatre, Steakley pairs The Who's beloved rock-opera with the imaginative world of Alice in Wonderland. Third Rail Projects' critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production of THEN SHE FELL will celebrate its 1000th performance on Friday, August 15th. This immersive theater event is inspired by the life and writings of Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland). It is written, directed, designed and choreographed by Zach Morris, Tom Pearson and Jennine Willett and in collaboration with The Company. Performances of this open-ended run take place at The Kingsland Ward at St. Johns, a century-old institutional building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that allows the action to play out on 3 floors. Theatre Aspen's new play development series is underway, with the early workshopping of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater musical Alice By Heart, based on the Lewis Carroll novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland this Saturday, May 31st, at the Wheeler Opera House at 7:30 pm.
