by Stage Tube - Jul 13, 2015

Today in 2011, the return engagement of the second Broadway revival of HAIR opened at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 67 performances. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. Hair tells the story of the 'tribe', a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the 'Age of Aquarius' living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Biggest & Bloodiest Tony Awards Best Musical BattlesSOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Biggest & Bloodiest Tony Awards Best Musical Battles
by Pat Cerasaro - May 20, 2015

Bloodshed is par for the course during Tony Awards season, especially as it reaches its peak in the last handful of weeks leading up the big annual ceremony feting theatre's best, so today we take a look back at some of the absolute most brutal and tight Tony Award races for Best Musical in history. Although comparing a group of musicals - alike as dissimilar as they may be - may be an unfair proposition in practice, there is only one way a winner is decided when the Tony Awards rolls around and it unfortunately always finds fan favorites, critical darlings and a few commercial hits vying for top honors. There can only be one Best Musical - well, except for 1960 when there were actually two mainstage entertainments given the prize; THE SOUND OF MUSIC and FIORELLO, with no less than GYPSY ending up an also-ran. Who will claim the trophy on June 7? Tune in then to see! (more...)

by BWW News Desk - May 12, 2015

St. Dunstan's Theatre Guild of Cranbrook presents Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, with music by Galt MacDermot. This 1960s musical remains timely and popular because of its commentary on love, peace, and politics. The story focuses on Berger (Gannon Styles, Northville), Claude (Dan Clair, Canton), and Sheila (Bridget Leary, Bloomfield Hills), along with the rest of the 'tribe' as they attempt to reconcile their desire for personal freedom with the traditional expectations put in place by their parents and society. Hair will be a crowd-favorite with hit songs 'Aquarius,' 'Let the Sunshine,' and 'Hair'. (more...)

by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Apr 22, 2015

It was the summer of 1988 when I first heard the melodious JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR score. After church, Mamma and Nanny T would make rounds to the local garage sales and the original cast album was one of their finds. I had a vintage stereo with a record player and this was my solace after church or rehearsal. When Bayou City Theatrics announced this show my excitement ranneth over and I was ready to head to the theatre to see what the creatives had for the American Stage. (more...)

by Steve Wilson - Mar 29, 2015

The rock musical Hair has been produced many times over the years in Kansas City, but never has it been presented the way the Kansas City Repertory Theatre brought it to the Spencer Theatre on opening night March 27. Artistic Director Eric Rosen directs Hair: Retrospective, which runs through April 12 at the theater on the University of Missouri at Kansas City campus. The retrospective may actually be more enjoyable than the musical itself, (not just my opinion, heard from audience members also). (more...)
