Today in 2009, the second Broadway revival of HAIR opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it ran for 519 performances. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. Hair tells the story of the 'tribe', a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the 'Age of Aquarius' living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Adam Shankman has been announced as the director and choreographer of the Hollywood Bowl's upcoming production of HAIR, which won the Tony and Drama Desk Award for best revival of a musical in 2009. Shankman is an Emmy-nominated director and choreographer who recently directed and choreographed the film adaptations of Hairspray and Rock of Ages; directed episodes of Glee and Modern Family, as well as Prop 8: The Musical; and was the producer for the Step Up movies. The Mercer County Community College (MCCC) Theatre Program presents 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black' at the Trenton Campus as one of the highlights of its Black History Month events. Performances are tonight, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. in Kerney Hall. Students from the college's Entertainment Technology Program will provide lighting and sound. Kerney Hall is located in MCCC's Kerney Building at 102 N. Broad Street.
