BWW Review: Roundhouse CABARET Packs An Outsized WallopBWW Review: Roundhouse CABARET Packs An Outsized Wallop
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Apr 27, 2016

This Sally (Andrea Goss) is definitely British, definitely a waif and of limited talent, and has her eyes wide open to the hell her generation of revelers is headed toward in a handcart. Her biggest number, Cabaret, is delivered as nearly a de profundis, a wail of a trauma victim. (more...)

BWW Review: Donna McKechnie's 'Visit' with Kander & Ebb Falls Short of Expectations at Feinstein's/54 BelowBWW Review: Donna McKechnie's 'Visit' with Kander & Ebb Falls Short of Expectations at Feinstein's/54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Apr 22, 2016

Ninety percent of the way through her new 54 Below show, A Visit With Kander and Ebb, Donna McKechnie delivers the unquestioned highlight of this show, “I Walk Away” (The Visit), wherein the character Claire Zachanassian ruefully explains how she accrued her fortune through the deaths of successive husbands. Phrasing is superb, vocal confident, acting strong. Unfortunately, while the show's finale “Yes!” (70, Girls, 70) is appealing for vivacity and notable lack of pretense, nothing else comes close to this satisfying parenthesis. (more...)

BWW Review: CHICAGO Sensualizes MurderBWW Review: CHICAGO Sensualizes Murder
by Katherine Waddell - Apr 22, 2016

When I first heard that a Catholic college, Saint Mary's College to be exact, was putting on the musical Chicago, I was skeptical. Knowing that Chicago is quite the risque musical with all types of salacious subject matter, I wasn't quite sure how they were going to pull it off. Well, let me be blunt, Saint Mary's did not look very Catholic this past Saturday night when I saw the second showing of the musical. (more...)

BWW Review: CABARET National Tour at Durham Performing Arts CenterBWW Review: CABARET National Tour at Durham Performing Arts Center
by Jeffrey Kare - Apr 20, 2016

Based on John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood's short story Goodbye to Berlin, Cabaret is based in the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub as the Nazis were rising to power in Berlin back in 1931. The action is overseen by a Master of Ceremonies with the club serving as a metaphor for some of the ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany. The story revolves around 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Clifford Bradshaw. A sub-plot involves a doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fraulein Schneider and her suitor Herr Schultz. (more...)
