BWW Reviews: Stellar LIZ CALLAWAY Shares and Soars with Ease at Metropolitan RoomBWW Reviews: Stellar LIZ CALLAWAY Shares and Soars with Ease at Metropolitan Room
by Alix Cohen - Jul 29, 2015

Liz Callaway's For the Record show last night at The Metropolitan Room was literally the live recording of songs in preparation for her upcoming autumn CD release, The Essential Liz Callaway, 'and another recording I have up my sleeve later.' Except for a pause between numbers, choices with seemingly little cohesive rhyme or reason were so fluently bridged by amiable, explanatory patter one might've thought this was a thematic show. The eminently likeable performer made us feel we were in her living room, while never letting down professional standards. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Jacob Storms Thunders Through Metropolitan Room; Arthur Pomposello Pops Up Again With Blues/Jazz Sets at Don't Tell MamaBWW Reviews: Jacob Storms Thunders Through Metropolitan Room; Arthur Pomposello Pops Up Again With Blues/Jazz Sets at Don't Tell Mama
by Andrew Martin - Jul 28, 2015

In his new show at the Metropolitan Room, Give My Regards to Broadway (which opened on July 18), Jacob Storms wholeheartedly disproves the perception that a singer making their debut in the cabaret arena need a director or more than just a pianist to prove their greatness. Over at Don't Tell Mama, former Oak Room show producer Arthur Pomposello has re-emerged with a new regular blues supper club show. (more...)

BWW Reviews: With His Smooth, Swinging Style, MARCUS GOLDHABER Is a Resonant Delight at 54 BelowBWW Reviews: With His Smooth, Swinging Style, MARCUS GOLDHABER Is a Resonant Delight at 54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Jul 27, 2015

Marcus Goldhaber wears his mantle lightly. Emulating such as Chet Baker, Hoagy Carmichael, and Fred Astaire—those artists who most often sounded nonchalant, yet polished-- the vocalist offers pared down (not simplistic) interpretations of American Songbook/jazz numbers with emotional translucence, as well as authoring his own fine contributions to the oeuvre. I dare you to distinguish those from songs originating in the 1940s and 1950s. With Free and Easy: Livin' on Swing Street at 54 Below (July 25), Goldhaber takes us on a personal walking tour of musical influence. Material is varied yet sustains a distinct style. The vocalist is unhurried (even when up-tempo), mindful of lyrics, and elegantly restrained. He seems comfortable on stage and refreshingly sincere. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jul 27, 2015

The magic of Shakespeare is derived from the fact that the renowned plays written by the Bard of Avon can nimbly be transported from London's Globe Theater in Elizabethan England to the spell-casting city of New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century. That's what Ruby In The Dust have done with their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, as they've taken the Bard to the bayou. Audiences who expect to hear the sound of the lute for musical accompaniment will be intrigued to listen to the jazz of Dr. John, who gave his approval for its inclusion, in this production. BWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis' Delightful and De-Lovely ANYTHING GOESBWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis' Delightful and De-Lovely ANYTHING GOES
by Chris Gibson - Jul 24, 2015

When you've been reviewing shows for a while you're bound to see a few more than once or twice. And, while I've had the opportunity to see ANYTHING GOES a couple of times before, I can honestly say this is the finest production I've been privileged to attend. Packed with a slew of memorable tunes (music and lyrics by the late, great Cole Porter), a clever and very amusing script (new book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman), high energy dancing, and a top notch cast, this ranks as one of my favorites shows of the year. Stages St. Louis consistently delivers quality entertainment, but this presentation far exceeded my already high expectations, and I honestly consider it to be a must-see! It's a genuine crowd pleasing experience that will make you want to come back for more. But, get your tickets now, because it will surely sell-out quickly! (more...)
