BLOOMSDAY Announced At North Coast Repertory Theatre

North Coast Repertory Theatre launches the new decade with Steven Dietz's lyrical BLOOMSDAY, a time-travel tale set amidst tourists exploring the pubs and streets of James Joyce's 'Ulysses.' This San Diego premiere follows an older couple retracing their steps to rediscover their younger selves. If you've ever wished you could go back and have a second chance at a decision you made back in your 20s, this winsome tale will linger with you. Bloomsday is a sweet and engaging tale with a touch of fantasy, suggesting that with good heart and determination one might literally be able to rewrite the past...perhaps...or at least to believe that one has done so. Don't miss this intelligent, heartwarming play.

BWW Review: THE LITTLE MERMAID Enchants at Musical Theatre West

Currently docked at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach through July 28 is Musical Theater West's wonderfully vibrant new regional production of THE LITTLE MERMAID, Disney's Broadway stage adaptation of their hit 1989 animated classic, which itself was adapted from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The resulting show achieves a cheerful, pleasant, and often charming hybrid that honors the original Disney-esque qualities of the film, but also shows what one may call a 'director's cut'---wherein the new 'extras' expand the musical even further in size, elements, and thematic mood. MTW's production is a visual treat.

Review: MAMMA MIA! Celebrates the Power of Family, Friendship and the Universal Need for Love and Acceptance

Somewhere in the world tonight there are 7 performances of the hit musical MAMMA MIA! onstage entertaining audiences. In fact, the show based on the music by Swedish pop group ABBA, has become so popular that the only continent where a regional or touring production has not occurred is Antarctica, and the show has set the record for premiering in more cities faster than any other musical in history. And after seeing the current 3-D Theatricals production, it's easy to see why audiences continue to fill theaters to experience the fun, spectacle, great music, and overall happy atmosphere generated by this feel-good musical.

BWW Review: South Coast Repertory Stages World Premiere of SHREW!

How do you "fix" the misogyny of Shakespeare's now antiquated THE TAMING OF THE SHREW? For playwright Amy Freed, it means injecting it with a noticeable dose of equality empowerment, and then shifting its characters' traits and motivations as if written from a female's perspective. That is the premise of South Coast Repertory's latest World Premiere production SHREW!-which continues performances in Costa Mesa through April 21. The results? A funny but flawed update with good intentions.

Amy Freed's SHREW! Has World Premiere At South Coast Repertory

Playwright Amy Freed has always been a Shakespeare fan. Her breakout hit, The Beard of Avon (SCR-commissioned and premiered, 2001), was a smart, funny look at the controversy surrounding the authorship of Shakespeare's plays. Now comes SHREW! (March 24-April 21, Segerstrom Stage), in which Freed has re-imagined The Bard's play, The Taming of the Shrew, as a wickedly funny love story of two people who find their way to true, deep and mutual love. Art Manke directs SHREW!, which is an anchor production of the 2018 Pacific Playwrights Festival. Tickets are available at www.scr.org.
