The master discusses the imperative importance of orchestrations!

Legendary songwriter and dramatist Stephen Sondheim addresses details of orchestrating for original cast recordings as part of a fascinating new orchestration-centric video featurette now available to view, provided courtesy of Masterworks Broadway in honor of the 39th anniversary of the opening of popular Sondheim musical revue SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM.

Sondheim candidly shares, "Every recording, the orchestrator at the very least sweetens the orchestra."

Sondheim instructively adds, "The orchestrator is completely involved with the recording - I wouldn't dream of going into a studio without the orchestrator right there."

"The orchestrator is always there, for numerous reasons, but mostly to be ready for changing - because sometimes he will change something simply because it's better in the studio, even if it's not better in the pit. And, so, I wouldn't dream of doing it without them there," Sondheim concludes.
