Angelina Fiordellisi, Founding Artistic Director of the Cherry Lane Theatre, has issued the following statement regarding the premature closing -- effective immediately -- of Israel Horovitz's comedy OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES, starring Estelle Parsons, Judith Ivey, Ms. Fiordellisi and Francesca Choy-Kee:

"Last week at the July 6th performance of OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES, Estelle had been debilitated by the heat and felt ill at intermission. The remainder of the performance was cancelled and Estelle was taken to the hospital for care and observation overnight. She left there with a clean bill of health and remains in good health, but upon further consultation with her long-time physician, it has been determined that it is inadvisable for her to resume the rigors of performing this two-act play. Under the circumstances, we regret that we must cancel the remainder of the play's engagement. We love Estelle and want her to have the rest and peace of mind she needs."

The play was to have run through July 31. The final full performance was played on Wednesday, July 6th matinee, the evening performance concluded at intermission.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES -- a new comedy by Israel Horovitz (MY OLD LADY), with a cast starring Oscar winner and 5-time Tony nominee Estelle Parsons, two-time Tony winner Judith Ivey, along with Angelina Fiordellisi (ZORBA on Broadway opposite Anthony Quinn) and Francesca Choy-Kee (DISGRACED) - began previews June 7 and opened June 19, in a world-premiere production by Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St.) in Greenwich Village. The play is directed by Barnet Kellman.

At the time of closing, the sold-out Off-Broadway hit, OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES will have played 13 previews performances and 16 regular performances.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES depicts what happens when four women arrive in Paris for the funeral of a 100-year-old man who loved each of them - at times variously, at times simultaneously. For 24 hours, they share his apartment, delicious secrets, and a dead cat.
