The score to Bright Star is a delicious blend of Americana, blue grass and gospel, and it's great. This last Thursday I started my day by whetting my appetite for things to come (I was seeing Bright Star on Broadway that evening before welcoming the cast to Sessions). I spent my morning listening to the cast album. I was immediately taken with it's signature sound and sweeping melodies. Steve and Edie know what they are doing. Bluegrass on Broadway... it works. How? Who cares! It works.

Then I saw the show, and the cast is everything and so very in "the pocket" stylistically. When most of us think of Broadway musicals we think of big broad belty voices screaming in the rafters (which this cast can easily do), but it takes a special bunch to be just as moving and affective chomping into this country fried groove. Well, we got to the heart of it as the Bright Star cast performed music they used to AUDITION for the show as well as some other countrified favorites. And, once again, it works... it just works.

"Rising Stars" Emily Schulteis and Michael Muenchow brought the 4th of July fireworks and very special guest, Baautiful's Rebecca LaChance fit right in with a scrumptious acoustic set.

BROADWAY SESSIONS takes place every Thursday evening at The Laurie Beechman Theater inside The West Bank Cafe, located at 407 West 42nd Street (corner of 42nd Street and 9th Avenue).
