“War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy is not only a chronicle of the bourgeois Russia during the Napoleonic War, but also deals with the suffering and hope of some people who are trapped in the networks of historical circumstances.
The director, Tomaz Pandur, has brought together a line-up from the Republics of the former Yugoslavia to speak about today’s war and peace, recalling the brutalities that occurred following the break-up of Yugoslavia. They know what war is. And they also know what peace is, and what is in the middle. They know because this has all formed part of their lives. They may well know the truth. But, which truth? Whose truth? That of the theatre. This is the truth that they know only too well, about which they are honest in a direct, self-confessing way, performing “War and Peace”. A truth that is powerful and sincere enough to move audiences worldwide.
