A young unemployed man, Semyon, who believes all of his problems and woes will be solved if he learns to play the tuba. When that plan fails, Semyon contemplates suicide. Word spreads, and suddenly various strangers, each representing a different piece of Soviet society, invade Semyon's home and incessantly plead with him to martyr himself for their cause and their gain.
