Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has earned a coveted place as one of the world's leading orchestras. International tours have taken them to some of the most prestigious concert halls, including Salzburg’s Grosse Festspielhaus, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris; the Suntory Hall, Tokyo; and the Barbican Hall, London and Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow.

Leading conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Sir Neville Marriner, Leonard Slatkin and Vasily Petrenko are regularly invited to take charge of specific concert cycles. The outstanding American conductor James Gaffigan was appointed music director in 2011.

The LSO’s concerts have long featured soloists of international renown – these include Renaud Capuçon, Hilary Hahn, Gidon Kremer, Viktoria Mullova, Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Radu Lupu, Maria João Pires and Krystian Zimerman.

The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1806. As a dynamic ensemble with a 200-year history, it best understands how to leverage creativity within tradition and innovation. The LSO attacks the classical-romantic repertoire with unabashed curiosity; its focus on individual composers gives rise to creative cycles of their works, which has the effect of deepening audience appreciation of the music. In addition, the orchestra takes every opportunity to highlight the rarities of the repertoire, broadening the horizons of its eager audiences and embracing music of a contemporary character.
