Daring as it is to present it within limitations of a stage performance, the musical past of Jerusalem provides an irresistibly tempting inspiration for any musician. The city has been the beating heart of three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – where songs of joy, longing, sorrow and praise have echoed for thousands of years. Its walls whisper the tales of pilgrims, prophets, warriors and merchants who flocked to the city from near and far seeking rewards both heavenly and earthly.
A highly acclaimed musicologist and an important figure in the world of early music, Jordi Savall's creation Jerusalem. City of the two peaces (2008) is based on his passion for Jerusalem. Accompanied by his ensemble Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya, with Israeli, Palestinian, Iraqi, Greek, Armenian and Turkish traditional musicians, Savall brings to the stage a musical odyssey of 3,000 years, of three faiths, of countless generations and of numerous instruments. From the ancient Holy Land to medieval Europe, from the vineyards of the Greek Islands to the highlands of Armenia; from the harp to the kanun and al oud to the lute; from Hebrew psalms to Arabic prayers and from Latin chants of Christian monks to zikirs of Sufi dervishes, Savall’s Jerusalem invites audiences to a vast and timeless musical experience.
