In just a few weeks, the breathtaking stage production of LIFE OF PI will sail into Proctors in Schenectady! Based on Yann Martel’s 2001 best-selling novel, which captivated readers and later became an Oscar-winning film in 2012, the story made waves once again with its 2019 stage debut in the UK before dazzling Broadway audiences in 2023. Now, it’s hitting the road with its first U.S. National Tour, and I had the pleasure of speaking with Taha Mandviwala, who brings the iconic role of Pi Patel to life. Taha isn’t just a phenomenal actor; he’s also an athlete, wellness coach, and self-proclaimed D&D enthusiast. With his infectious energy and thoughtful insights, our conversation was as inspiring as the story he helps tell on stage!

Winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical, this quirky musical comedy with an intentionally-diffused serious undertone continues performances at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through February 2, 2025. A generally entertaining show with lots of laughs in spite of its title character’s fatal ailment, KIMBERL AKIMBO is a thematically zig-zagging new musical that is at once intentionally endearing but also surprisingly (and amusingly) chaotic. The show is ultimately winning thanks mostly to the wonderful performances of its two leads, three-time Tony Award nominee Carolee Carmello and her adorable co-star Miguel Gil.

The term “megamix” became widely known on Broadway with that game-changing jukebox musical Mamma Mia! in 2001. The British import, featuring the tunes of ABBA set within a new story, concluded with a multi-song medley after the curtain call that encouraged the audience to sing and dance along.

Richard Strauss’s DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN (THE WOMAN WITHOUT A SHADOW), with a libretto by his long-time collaborator, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, has made a triumphant return to the Met with a stellar cast and the Met Orchestra in peak form under Yannick Nezet-Seguin. It dazzled and glowed like few other evenings in recent memory, in a production by Herbert Wernicke, who died young, not long after its debut in 2001.

tick, tick…BOOM!: Premiering Off-Broadway in 2001, this production has been performed worldwide in countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada. In 2021, it was adapted into a film, earning two Academy Award nominations. The legendary musical composer Jonathan Larson, who created the masterpiece “RENT” but passed away unexpectedly just before its opening night, based this work on his own life. This musical captures Larson’s unyielding passion for his dreams despite outside skepticism, his anxieties about the future, and his inner struggles, all woven together with remarkable music.

Dear Readers, if you know my reviews then you know how picky I can be, especially with shows I love. One such show is certainly “Legally Blonde: The Musical”, currently playing at Village Theatre. I managed to see the original cast down in San Francisco and it’s always held a special place in my heart. Plus, I just think it’s an outstanding show. So, while I think the current Village production has oodles going for it in regards to talent and general all-around fun, there were just a few tiny things that kept it from blowing me away, the big one being that ineffable spark. But we’ll get to that.
