Abingdon Theatre Company isn't one to shy away from grandiosity. Sure, the 26-year-old grassroots theatre company may pride itself on its daring, intimate productions, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to throw a party, repeatedly pulling out all the stops at their annual anniversary bash. "We're able to take something small - say, a show with a seven or eight-member cast - and transform it into this big, lavish spectacle… without sacrificing the true heart of the story or the music or any of that," says company Associate Artistic Director Chad Austin. "You could say it's our special little Abingdon touch." One look at last year's flashy, brassy And the World Goes 'Round gala event, which capped off a quarter century on the off-Broadway scene, and you're sure to agree. That's likely why it comes as no surprise that this year finds them back at the Edison Ballroom ringing in #26 with a(nother) glam and glitzy extravaganza like only they can produce.

Eric Williams grew up watching Christmas movies with his family in St. Louis. In fact, he says it was his family who instilled in him a passion and excitement for the holiday movie genre. And while he likes some of the more traditional classic films, the more recent ones that put a contemporary spin on Christmas are by far his favorites. "They try and tell you what the meaning of Christmas is, but do it in a very fresh and modern way," he says. "The modern sensibility of such an old tradition, it really tickles me and excites me." So, it should be no surprise that the 2003 movie 'Elf' is on Williams' short list of Christmas favorites. But what might be surprising is the fact that it wasn't the Will Ferrell movie that made Williams want to step into Buddy the Elf's green, pointy shoes.  It was the original song "World's Greatest Dad" from the Broadway musical that really spoke to Williams.

How much would you pay for a white painting? This odd question sparks a firestorm in Yasmina Reza's Tony and Olivier Award winning comedic masterpiece about the lives of three old friends, the meaning of art and life, and the lengths we go a?" however, joyful, painful, or maddening a?" to protect those we care about. Marc's friend, Serge has bought a white painting. Simple. But to Marc, the painting is a joke and he expresses that fully. Serge doesn't take this reaction well, and confronts Marc on many things, among those, his lack of standards to judge art. And so, the battle begins. Another friend, the hapless Yvan, gets pulled into the quarrel, whose tepid attempts at peacemaking only add fuel to the fire, and a hilarious-yet-poignant battle ensues that threatens to destroy their friendship. 'ART' is an intelligent play about a simple piece of art becoming an external representation of inner values; the perfect marriage between Moliere and Woody Allen, a nonstop crossfire of crackling language, biting humor, and the fragile, feeling hearts that make us who we are. It's safe to say that Natalie Douglas is a little obsessed with Cher. Throughout TRIBUTES: CHER, the latest in her award-winning TRIBUTES series, Douglas made her way through the icon's life from her early career up to the present, both in song and in story. But the real focus of the July 16 show at Birdland wasn't necessarily in identifying with the woman, the myth, the legend that is Cher. (After all, how can anyone fully relate to someone for whom a phrase as simple as "Hi again" is a meme-able moment?)
