The 2020 Tony nominees are already winners... literally. For some, this marks their first nomination, but others have already won Tony Awards in seasons past. We took a look at which nominees have won at least a Tony or two (or seven) - amongst them, they've gathered a total of 42 awards!

The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble re-opens its re-envisioning of the Odyssey's 1969 West Coast premiere of The Serpent, the Obie award-winning play by Jean-Claude van Itallie. The production initially opened in March, 2020 as part of the Odyssey's 50th Anniversary “Circa '69” Season, but was shuttered five days later by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The annual Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival returns to the Green on Saturday, September 18, from noon until 10:00 p.m. Canceled because of the pandemic in 2020, this year's free concert pays tribute to one of its founders Linda Kiger Smith and Mike Fabrizio, a longtime member of the festival committee, both of whom passed away in June.

Theatre Under The Stars will host the Leading Ladies Luncheon on Friday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at Houston’s renowned Tony’s on Richmond Ave. This annual event honors outstanding Houstonians who champion the performing arts and arts education.

“Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It” chronicles Moreno’s decades-long career, from growing up in poverty on a farm in Puerto Rico to becoming an EGOT winner. 

The news is filled with reports of hate crimes against Asians during the last year. The numbers may be up, but the bigotry isn't new.

The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!

Heading the event will be Grand Marshals  LISA LISA; the Latina Pop Music Legend, Dance Theatre of Harlem founding member and current Artistic Director VIRGINIA JOHNSON; and H.T. CHEN & DIAN DONG, founding directors of Chen Dance Center. 

On Friday, April 2, 2021, Steinway & Sons releases SIMPLE MUSIC, a complete recording of the rarely heard book of 33 miniatures from music for stage and screen by Georgia's legendary composer Giya Kancheli, performed and reimagined by two intrepid masters of their instruments: pianist Jenny Lin and accordion virtuoso Guy Klucevsek. 

Moreno starred on the short-lived '9 to 5' television series in 1982 and 1983. She played Violet Newstead, the character originated in the movie by Lily Tomlin and eventually played on Broadway by Allison Janney.

Today, baritone Will Liverman has released Dreams of a New Day: Songs by Black Composers with pianist Paul Sánchez on Cedille Records. Liverman says, “Right now, it is more important than ever to celebrate the contributions of Black composers, and I’m honored to give voice to the art songs on this album.'

The acquisition is for worldwide rights, with the film set for theatrical release as well as exclusively streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and internationally on Star and Star+.

Smuin Contemporary Ballet will present Long disDANCE Love, a playful virtual dance showcase featuring the Company’s signature fusion of classical and contemporary ballet. The program will feature romantic and frisky Michael Smuin works, a luscious excerpt from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s breathtaking “Requiem for a Rose,” and more.
